Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth.
i read Keith Hart’s autobiography Self in the World this year, the week after he died. i’m salty i can’t tell him how much it meant to me. so do it while you can!
Is there a piece of scholarship on your syllabus that students really connected with or really worked well for your semester? You should take some time today to email those authors and tell them. I love sending these emails.

i have no idea why “the US must adopt the defense procurement strategy of the weaker party fighting a defensive conflict with deep asymmetries in order project power abroad(???)” is becoming a mainstay opinion of the commentariat but here we are

"Birth of the Homunculus"

A sorceress astounded by her creation.

This painting has been floating around in my head for months now, and I only found the right time to bring it to fruition yesterday!

gfm effortlessly destroying r crumb in one sentence vs my entire life of uncomfortable critique of alt comix. wow WHY DON’T YOU WRITE A BOOK ABOUT IT
I've never liked Crumb's work, which I think hides behind abjection rather than using it to lay things bare, but this is really something else.

54 years ago, Sen. Mike Gravel had the courage to read the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional Record, ensuring the public could read the classified findings.

Today, someone in Congress today needs to find the same courage to read the boat strike memo.

Tell them to with @freedom.press's tool.
Reform Government Secrecy
The government keeps too many secrets, and many shouldn’t be secrets in the first place. We must fight overclassification and defend our right to know.

PLAYING CARDS!

For day two of our Advent fun, here's one of the Newberry's many sets of playing cards. It's incomplete, but I love it anyway! (Wing ZX 547 .B4) It's by 16th c. German artist Sebald Beham and the acorns, pomegranates, and flowers suit me just fine!

i see a lot of people on Bluesky mad about “Democrats suck” discourse like it’s the problem driving people away from the party, but like, come on. half a dozen leftists bitching online vs this shit? are you serious?
For some reason Democratic leaders seem to prefer telling voters what they won’t be able to do, rather than what they’d like to do.

If Hegseth ordered a war crime and lied about it, shouldn’t Ds try for impeachment? Put Rs on the spot. They might get a few defections.

Jeffries says not to expect Democrats to pursue Hegseth impeachment over boat strikes
"Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor," he said.

[vibrates with pride in second-rate public land grant university system]
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

a couple weeks back i had a few similar interactions on here that left a bad taste in my mouth. the algtorithmic-tech-whatever of online comms shapes exposure to content that we can’t control, we DO still have a lot quite a LOT of power to establish tenor & expectations of personal interactions.
