If you're familiar with the asylum process, then you know that a grant of asylum within ninety days only happens when a certain alphabet soup government agency goes to bat for the applicant and insists that the process be expedited. That's plainly what happened here. The assailant is a company man.
Officials criticize Biden vetting, but Afghan shooting suspect was granted asylum under Trump
The Trump administration on Thursday blamed Biden-era vetting failures for the admission of an Afghan immigrant suspected of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., but the alleged gu...

I'd hazard a guess that most Catholics asking the pope whether it's permissible to be polygamous are not engaged in your totally based unproblematic modern polycule. They are doing the old fashioned "sucks for women" kind.

I've spent the last four years saying "y'all aren't shopping like we're in a recession" and I feel a little vindicated. And concerned. Very concerned.

Like, this is applying the lowest possible standard here: I’m not even asking the US press to manage the impossible task of caring about the millions of poor people around the world being killed or having their lives ruined; they can’t even manage to judge it as a political win/lose story

Like, they very publicly set goals for it! They gloated about how they were smashing the rules to get stuff done! It was by *far* the highest profile policy story of Trump’s first few months! And it was just a complete failure and nobody in the press cares

It remains insane to me that DOGE was treated at the time as an impressive shock and awe accomplishment - “you can’t deny he’s getting stuff done!” - and then instantly memory holed by the press once if became clear it was a total failure by every possible standard including Musk’s own
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

That’s why the expanded child tax credit was so popular and there was mass public support for its renewa.. *looks at notes* oh no
I think every major policy initiative has to come with a specific Really Obvious Immediate Benefit for voters; if BBB had come with $1000 checks or nationwide free buses or some such, it would have been a huge success. You could fund universal preschool with a fraction of this year’s tax cuts.
Unlike the far right, liberals and progressives do not live inside an endlessly mutable reactionary phantasmagoria where the search for energizing narratives rules all. We have actual policy objectives. Those objectives are doomed to fail in the media dreamland we’re building

I've been working on Thanksgiving for four years in a row and my family still acts like it's the first time, every time.

Put the turkey in the oven now so it can rest while they do the mac and cheese later. If I waited until I got off we'd be eating at 9pm.

November 27, 2025 at 1:34 PM
The sad thing about going in at 10 tomorrow is I won't be able to take my Thanksgiving meal with me to eat on my break. It's a thing I've done for the past 4 years and it makes working on the holiday not depressing. This year I can't do it, and that sucks.

Don’t forget that *Trump’s own lawyer’s argument* to the Supreme Court in the immunity case was that the check on the President using his immunity to order criminal acts was that those under him would not follow illegal orders. Now it’s a crime for lawmakers to remind servicemembers of that?
The President doesn't want you standing up and speaking out against him, so he's coming after me to intimidate all of us.

But I won't back down — and neither should you.

Nuzzi is like Trump in this sense: the worst thing about America is not that someone that awful exists, the worst thing is that much of the press promotes and normalizes it for clicks.

Trump's speech about the shooting in DC veered into him attacking the Somali community in Minnesota, which of course had nothing to do with the shooting. Gives away his bigoted game.

To summarize. According to Lizza, Nuzzi, in addition to fucking multiple subjects without disclosure:

1) outed a confidential source
2) fed source information to RFK
3) damaged other people’s reputation through anonymous posts on Reddit
4) advised RFK and repeatedly acted on his behalf
this was bad before, but these are the most troubling and serious allegations you can make about a journalist. if they’re true, i genuinely can’t think of a worse scandal in the history of political journalism. devastating to our industry, to public trust as a whole, and to everyone in its orbit

It's so stupid and pedantic of me but it drives me BONKERS when people complaining about American recipes or units of measurement go "a cup? haha what size cup?" Because a cup doesn't require guesswork, it's a standardized unit of measurement it's eight ounces I learned that in kindergarten
