it is our responsibility to build a city that keeps all of our street users safe. i’m so, so sorry we failed you. let this be a reminder of the urgency and importance of safe street infrastructure.

please join me in keeping these two victims of traffic violence in our thoughts.

it is so heartbreaking to repeatedly see our residents and visitors, especially the most vulnerable, be subject to such violence on our streets.

This photo of Bancroft Way shows how street space is now used:
1/4 for buses
1/4 for cars
1/4 for loading and parking
1/4 for bikes

Previous it was 1/2 cars, 1/2 parking, even though most people using the street used the bus, bike, or walking.

Epicenter currently put at this interesting little traffic island, where Piedmont meets Dwight from the NW, with now-blocked-off slip lane.

What did Alpha Sigma Pi do?

Berkeley just experienced a small earthquake.

Check USGS for the official earthquake magnitude: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Remember to drop, cover, and hold on during earthquake shaking.

On one hand, reducing car use reduces urban pollution.
But on the other, everyone likes it and cities become more livable
Average nitrogen dioxide concentration in Paris has fallen significantly Her proposals have faced pushback — from right-leaning politicians, a car owners’ association and suburban commuters, who say that targeting cars makes their lives more difficult.

But last month, Parisians voted in a referendum to turn an additional 500 streets over to pedestrians. A year earlier, Paris had moved to sharply increase parking fees for SUVs, forcing drivers to pay three times more than they would for smaller cars. The city has also turned a bank of the Seine from a busy artery into a pedestrian zone and banned most car traffic from the shopping boulevard of Rue de Rivoli.

Carlos Moreno, a professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and a former adviser to the city, said the French capital has developed “an urban policy based on well-being.”

EVANSTON DEFLOCKS: City just issued a news release announcing that all 19 license plate cameras have been deactivated, and the contract will be fully terminated effective Sept. 26. Story TK.
Evanston Deactivates Flock Cameras and Terminates Contract

On August 26, the City of Evanston and the Evanston Police Department deactivated all 19 Flock Safety ALPR cameras. The City is no longer collecting or providing license plate reader data to the Flock network.

The findings of the Illinois Secretary of State’s audit, combined with Flock’s admission that it failed to establish distinct permissions and protocols to ensure local compliance while running a pilot program with federal users, are deeply troubling. As a result, the City has deactivated the cameras and issued a termination notice to Flock, effective September 26, 2025.

During this interim period until September 26, data collected by other agencies and shared on the Flock network will remain available for Evanston’s investigations into reported crimes. However, Evanston will not collect or share any data itself.

i think the word “special” is pretty subjective, but that’s not the point. you called a student and COB resident of 5+ years a “tourist”, which is a really dangerous insinuation.
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
this Commissioner is a UC Berkeley masters student and expert Californian architectural historian who has felt firsthand the effect of the housing crisis & is a resident of the City of Berkeley. students are not “tourists,” and you can criticize the Ordinance + Commission without claiming so.

I wish a very happy “fuck you” to everyone who thought throwing trans people under the bus was going to stop these lunatics

Their goal has *always* been the eradication of the entire LGBTQ+ community, and they’re not gonna stop at Obergefell either

This is why we fight for *everyone*
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
there is simply no way that only 3% of the city would end up evacuating without a car. at least 3% of the city’s population lives in UC Berkeley dorms! I’m pretty frustrated about this.
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
and you’re right that it doesn’t really matter if anyone switches their opinion now. the UC is banking on a lack of institutional knowledge and collective amnesia from students, the City, and the general public. so we need to all be pushing for what we were promised.
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
the city of berkeley (council) basically changed its perspective once the UC promised those PSH units? the conversation and disagreement was definitely not just about the dorms
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
and the UC’s fault for not prioritizing it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
? the UC hasn’t donated the land. it’s still their land, their project, and their responsibility.
cecilialunaparra.bsky.social
anyway, people who supported the project need to stop their knee jerk reactions to defend the university and fight for the PSH units that they promised that we so desperately need.

people who opposed the project in good faith need to stop their knee jerk reactions and fight for the same thing.

a lot of folks who accepted temporary shelter offers and then lost them then moved to 8th and harrison, which was swept last month.

unit 3 has asbestos, mold, and is overall a public health crisis. a student in the *new* transfer dorm was stuck in their faulty elevator for 6 hours in 100 degree heat last fall. a bed in a dorm costs at least twice the rent of an off campus apartment. they are not building the PSH they promised.
