Soon after, you get the sense a lot of the silly university wizarding stuff is so that if they're all consumed with _that_, they're not doing... _this_. And "we need to AVOID the big impressive fantasy battle" is a recurring plot and mood, getting us things like Jingo's list of how everyone dies

IIRC because it's been a while since I read both, Fantastic has some better characters like Cohen but Sourcery is the better story, as there is one instead of a series of events and you do get something from Rincewind and it just _goes there_ with the apocalypse - which hangs over later books

At least that was in response to a massive terrorist attack, which was still unsettling to witness and exploited, but it's a big thing where people died, not just... the guy they liked won and not everyone else is happy.

Now I'm remembering how great the Citizen Sump story was, both on its own merits (Sump is turned into a tragic figure and the mystery all hangs) and as a Citizen Kane pastiche because it twists everything (Sump applauding his wife's rubbish stageshow GENUINELY because he loves her)
