Gary Oswald ( @garyoswald.bsky.social ) considers "Operation Legacy", the destruction of many files related to the #BritishEmpire upon #decolonisation (in particular the #MalayanEmergency ) and #WhatIf policy had been different. www.sealionpress.co.uk/post/what-if...
What if there was no Operation Legacy?
By Gary Oswald. If you spend any time at all online looking for people talking about the British Empire (and honestly if you're reading this, you probably do), you'll have heard about Operation Legacy ...

India was gonna become independent in one form or another in the aftermath of the Great Depression, Afrikaner nationalism was already on the rise in South Africa and black national consciousness rising in both West Africa and the Caribbean.
Half of the WW2 revisionism you see in the UK about not entering the war is primarily about the delusion that had the UK not entered the war, they would have magically retained the entire Empire
The degree to which Britain and France deluded themselves in the 40s and 50s into believing that they could retain colonial rule for decades to come under the guise of training African peoples for self-rule is massively understated in histories of the Cold War imo.

The Cold War in Africa was in many ways the US and Europe being asked, would you be willing to be a bit less racist to oppose the Soviet Union and the US and Europe responding: no.

Absolute corker of a @2000ad.bsky.social In Orbit Every Wednesday podcast TOMORROW as Molcher & I seemed to perfectly align in a caffeine-fueled frenzy about FIREKIND and the benefits of the saucy middle bit of the the Drugs/Dragon venn diagram.

Don't miss it!

"We'd be happy with the public being disgusted with us, but we're not suffering bsky posts about how that extra £120m could be spent on a Leeds tram."
I enjoy the implication here that somewhere between the £630mn the UK pays to the UN (to sit on a board with Vladimir Putin) and the mooted c£750mn on the Board of Peace it becomes impossible to justify.

Lots of people in the replies/quotes making Gerry Anderson comparisons here and like - yeah, what else do you think tokusatsu special effects designers grew up watching?
Being tokupilled means going from "wow these effects are pretty corny" to "this is literally the coolest fucking thing I've ever seen in my life".

Dredd-but-it's-Art-Deco elseworlds tale Megatropolis in the Megazine was brilliant in its first book and it's brilliant now, and why it's brilliant is Kenneth Niemand and the late Dave Taylor made a tale that works perfectly well as its own dieselpunk future dystopia-cop tale if you ignore the Dredd
