"It’s no wonder a murderous serial killer would see Laurie, all alone and dressed up in a borderline infantile costume, and perceive her as the perfect victim. Too bad for the killer; he’s just falling right into a trap." Here's another October favorite, this time from @mollyhenery.bsky.social.
Sex, Teeth, and 'Trick 'r Treat' | Certified Forgotten
In her latest Uterus Horror column, Molly Henery explains how Michael Dougherty's 'Trick 'r Treat' finds teeth in sexual awakening.

"I like Rothe as a performer. I want her to make more movies. And when your target audience is already predisposed to cheering for one-third of a three-hander, that gives your horror movie a pretty safe floor." Here's @monagle.bsky.social on the new Jessica Rothe vehicle AFFECTION.
'Affection' Review: Jessica Rothe Remains a Scream Queen
BT Meza's 'Affection' offers another blend of horror and sci-fi for star Jessica Rothe, who remains one of the great Millennial scream queens.

"The tragedy of CARRIE, which both King and De Palma treat with the gravity that it deserves, is the idea that in high school, the worst thing to happen to someone is shame, embarrassment and rejection." Our celebration of Octobers past continues with this banger by @katiewalshstx.bsky.social.
Brian De Palma's 'Carrie' Celebrates Our Teenage Monsters
Katie Walsh shares how Stephen King and Brian De Palma's versions of 'Carrie' shaped her own high school experiences.

"In the years ahead, OVERLORD should remain a grotesque coping mechanism, a way to grapple with the reality of what we’re really capable of inflicting on each other — something no mere movie could match." This month, we're digging into a few of our favorites from past Octobers. Here's one from 2023.

Hey Philly(ish) friends: I am no longer able to make the Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-thon, so I'm going to run a quick lil' giveaway for anyone who signs up for the free @certifiedforgot.bsky.social newsletter this weekend. Details (and alt text) below. certifiedforgotten.com/newsletter

I have a conflict and can no longer attend the Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-thon! But rather than eat the ticket, I would like to give it away to one person who is willing to support Certified Forgotten, the independent horror publication I cofounded with film critic Matt Donato.

So here’s how it’ll work:

- Sign up for the free Certified Forgotten newsletter at the link below (www.certifiedforgotten.com/newsletter).
- Once you’ve subscribed to the newsletter, or if you’re already a subscriber, email me at monagle@certifiedforgotten.com to verify that you’re interested in the ticket giveaway.
- On Monday, October 6, I’ll choose one person who emailed me (via a random number generator) and send them my tickets.

Consider supporting @certifiedforgot.bsky.social if you're able.

CF's focus on lesser known films is vital.
Their writers are passionate and knowledgeable.

And @monagle.bsky.social & @donatobomb.bsky.social are two of the best people. Period.

“Al Ansari’s sophomore feature is another example of how a few good actors and a well-dressed set is more than enough to create genre cinema that colors outside the lines.” I adore Al Ansari’s RATTLE THE CAGE, and while this ain’t that, it’s still a strong piece of horror-melodrama. #FantasticFest
'The Vile' Review: Two Families Are One Family Too Many
Majid Al Ansari returns to Fantastic Fest with 'The Vile,' a mashup of melodrama and horror that examines the cruelty of polygamy.

“This is a movie more obsessed with the dead than the dying. That’s a strange distinction for a slasher to make, but one that is integral to how the story develops.” 13 DAYS TILL SUMMER is a hard movie to shake. That’s probably why I really liked it. #FantasticFest
'13 Days Till Summer' Review: Meet Your New Feel-Bad Slasher
Polish filmmaker Bartosz M. Kowalski's '13 Days Till Summer' is the feel-bad slasher of Fantastic Fest. It's also kind of great.

I do not identify as a horror guy, but the CF folks regularly intersect with stuff I like anyway, or help me find horror that does fit into my very-narrow wheelhouse. You should check em out.

Even if they're wrong about the masterpiece that is Lucky Number Slevin.

The Rewind, our weekly newsletter for both free and paid subscribers, is only available via email. So if you want to hear @monagle.bsky.social's musings on 30 DAYS OF NIGHT this week, you'll need to subscribe before 3:00 PM ET. certifiedforgotten.com/newsletter
Newsletter: "Because I live on the East Coast but work for a Texas-based company, it’s taken a minute for me to adjust to the time zone difference. That’s why I’ve challenged myself to make the time difference work for me. Starting this week, I’ve made it a goal to watch one (1) horror movie every morning before work. And while I plan to use this time for movies in my backlog, I’m particularly interested in horror movies I ruled out years ago that might be worth a second look.

Movies like David Slade’s adaptation of 30 Days of Night.

When 30 Days of Night hit theaters, I probably wasn’t the ideal audience member. For one, I grew up in Alaska and was pretty snooty about my home state’s depiction in film (get fucked, The Proposal). At the same time, as a recent college graduate, I had some pretty strong opinions about what was and wasn’t horror worth my time and attention."

"There’s a vagueness to Kitamura’s New York that undercuts the eldritch terrors of Barker’s writing." There's a lot more to love in THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN than you might remember, but it's missing the love-hate relationship with New York that makes the short story sing.
The Only Thing Missing in 'The Midnight Meat Train' Is New York
Ryuhei Kitamura's adaptation of 'The Midnight Meat Train' does author Clive Barker proud but leaves New York wanting.
