Just a lil @philnobilejr.bsky.social appreciation post: He's a really good friend – I mean the literal, actual best – but he's also such a good boss. Considerate, protective, transparent, supportive. He's constantly working yet still always answers "yes" when I ask him if he's free for a vent sesh ❤️

So @donatobomb.bsky.social put out his final Best Horror of 2025 list and I... don't actually have any jokes to make? I'm charmed that two overlooked films we talked about on the @certifiedforgot.bsky.social podcast, HIM and THE DAMNED, both made the final cut. Good list!

Now that folks have had the weekend to see WICKED: FOR GOOD, I'm over at @thewrap.com going long about how the ending doesn't just fail to meet to moment, it fails to live up to what Jon M. Chu and co. set up in Part 1.

"The girl in the bubble," indeed.

The 'Wicked: For Good' Ending Fails to Meet the Moment | Commentary
The ending of "Wicked: For Good" avoids the darker conclusion from the book, but does a disservice to the sociopolitical commentary in the process.

On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I think about the countless trans people whose names won't be plastered on infographics because the world was so hostile and violent to them that they felt the need to opt out on their own terms.

Mourn the dead.

It’s wild how 2025 gave us two Luigi Mangione-coded protagonists and they’re both from dystopian, pseudonymous Stephen King novels from a half century ago.

Other excellent strategies to avoid doomscrolling below! I also use "Focus Friend" and "Screen Zen" apps to make inaccessible any sites where I might be tempted to read something depressing
Nice. Earlier this year, I created a tab called "Idle scroll" in my browser that links to things like the Public Domain Image Archive.

I've also been getting books from the library because it puts me on a timeline to finish them. "Can't doomscroll right now--gotta finish my books!"

This is the move!
It’s not a silver bullet, but I’ve managed to circumvent a lot of doomscrolling by adding the Kindle shortcut to the lock-screen widgets

New — I wrote about the myriad ways journalism’s moral rot manifests, and how our crumbling institutions have created the conditions for it to fester:
Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Esptein's journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.

truly the weirdest of flexes
Btw about this from Lizza's reply: Olivia and I lived together for 4+ years (4 b'days, 4 Xmases, 4 anniversaries). That's like $1250 of jewelry per celebration. And her apartment was a writing studio. And I made an f-ton then. What was I supposed to do? Get her a lot of Gift Certificates from Kmart?

With a little time, I think I'll be able to safely say that Joe Hill's King Sorrow is one of my favorite books ever. It's ferocious and frightening, epic and empathetic, it's moving and it MOVES. I loved every minute I spent reading it; I will spend countless more thinking about it. It's a lifer.

I have multiple prints from Brianna (and one original!), and they’re all even more stunning in person
🎁Well, it's birthday week! My goal for birthday week? Sell one print for every year I've trodden this earth, plus one for the year to come. 43 in all. Can I do it? Let's see!

(Now is also the time to place holiday orders so they actually arrive for the holidays!)
