Been on a late 1970s/very early 1980s rock kick this week - Boston, Kansas, Styx, REO Speedwagon, a little bit of Rush, Van Halen, even some Foghat. Dunno why, but those hooks are owning me right now. “Foreplay/Long Time,” holy shit what a song. “Renegade”, “Carry On Wayward Son…” bliss.

AMAZING night not only with dear friends but happy to announce BLACK PHONE 2 is legit on of the best sequels I’ve seen in a while: equal parts a “Chapter 2” and “A New Beginning”, it’s full of heart but hits HARD too.
Thank you for the invite @crobertcargill.bsky.social!

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.

I get sad when theaters close, even franchise ones (this one’s not franchise). It’s one less communal space.

BREAKING: The SIFF Egyptian, the historic and beloved Capitol Hill movie theater, will not be reopening. After decades of bringing movie magic to Seattle audiences, the space will now permanently conclude operations under SIFF 📽️

My story for @seattletimes.com: www.seattletimes.com/entertainmen...

My next book will be a biography of Jack Nicholson, written as an epic story of the transformation of the movie industry and modern masculinity from the 1950s to the present, with Nicholson as the main character. The title: Leading Man.
New York Times bestselling author and film & TV critic at New York Magazine Matt Zoller Seitz's LEADING MAN, the definitive biography of Jack Nicholson, casting Nicholson as the complex main character in an era of American culture spanning six decades, while shining a light on the actor’s crucial role in shaping modern masculinity, both on and off the screen, based on new interviews and original reporting, to Amar Deol at Grand Central, in an exclusive submission, by Ethan Bassoff at WME.

Agreed. It takes time for these things to play out. In the meantime, don't share any AI content, and if you unknowingly do, delete it once you find out.

AI being shoved down our throats everywhere is exhausting, but I believe it's genuinely a positive signal. Tech companies aren't doing this because it's successful technology that is making them money. They're doing it because it's not and they're not. This is an extinction burst, not real growth.

Before you start, I'm not Catholic anymore for a reason. But I've always found the Popes to be consistent in their message. Pro-life means something to them, and not just about abortion. For Pope Leo to come out of the gate speaking against the hegemony is significant.
alancerny.bsky.social
Although I don't consider myself Catholic anymore, I am well versed in the popes. Pope Francis was a strong advocate and the papcy normally follows strong Popes with Popes that aren't overly vocal. That doesn't seem to be the case with Pope Leo. The Church may be getting into it in a big way. (1)

Could have gotten rid of RISE OF SKYWALKER and the Elevator Killer in one swoop, man.

I’ve had the privilege of being edited by Jeremy. He helped me with my STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS review where I ripped that movie a new asshole. Our mutual boss at the time didn’t care for it, but fuck that guy. I do not want Jeremy’s organs to liquify.

Editors rule. Love them. Save for the heavy-handed dickhead who recklessly revised a piece that left me sparring with a fact-checker over a falsehood I did not write. We worked it out, but the editor never apologized and is still making bank at a legacy media outlet today. I hope his organs liquify.

John Cena is doing next-level work in PEACEMAKER Season 2. I have pacing issues with this season (takes too long to get to where it needs to be), but no joke, Cena may be delivering one of the greatest superhero performances ever. He’s putting that character through some serious acting moments.

Threw on the new Criterion of NIGHTMARE ALLEY 2021 and forgot that the reappearance of Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen makes this the Catalina Wine Mixer of Guillermo Del Toro's oeuvre.

There’s an interview going around about AI, so before there are any questions, let me state unequivocally that BLACK PHONE 2 is 100% organic. AI was not used at any stage of the filmmaking from idea generation, research, look books, writing, onscreen images - anything. We’re old school and love it.

I can't wait to play it. But I have to put it off for a bit because nothing will get done once I get it and life keeps throwing crap at me.
