When they say “late stage capitalism” what do they mean exactly? Because I don’t see an end to capitalism anytime soon. Unless by “late stage” they mean humanity on this planet. If that, then yeah, sure.

As president, I decree…
There should always be theatrical screenings of the LOTR trilogy, 24/7 365, so that I don’t ever have to watch them at home.

I can go with that. SOLO is better than THE FORCE AWAKENS though.
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL: Watched the new Criterion 4K. While RUSHMORE and TENENBAUMS are my #1 and 2, this is easily #3. Sadly timely, beautiful, melancholic, and very, very funny. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen it. Ralph Fiennes is perfect.

“Rudeness is merely the expression of fear.”

I never “met” Udo Kier (too nervous) but I’ve been in the same room with him a couple times. It was enough just to be around him. Coolest, weirdest.

Eleven years ago, I had the nicest, intimate conversation with Udo. When an infamously pushy event-crasher tried to nudge his way into our chat by sitting down and awkwardly snickering at a joke Udo had just told me, he turned and went, "Why are you laughing?! That wasn't for you! Fuck off!" LEGEND.

Oh no, Udo Kier died. The world’s a little less weird, and that’s a shame.

Such a stupid-ass critic problem to have - end-of-year screeners coming in, excited to see the movies I’ve missed, but look, over here is fuckin’ MASTER AND COMMANDER or ALMOST FAMOUS in 4K.

Go down this thread, try to grab some free movies!
Guess what. The holidays are coming. I’ve bought quite a few 4Ks over the past several months. And I feel like being Movie Claus. So you know what that means… MOVIE CODES COMING! As always, first come, first serve. Best of luck! Starting… NOW!

Keep your 20 and go buy NEW DAY RISING.
with that list I got a crisp 20 in my pocket that says you owned at least one Hüsker Dü album.

I grew up a mile from Delmar Stadium, where this was filmed. I’ve flown kites there (as most people did there on weekends; it was known for that before the movie made it famous). I had my hair cut at Max’s dad’s barber shop. RUSHMORE wasn’t only shot in my town, it was shot in my specific area.

Watched the new @arrowvideo.bsky.social OUTLAND, which looks spectacular. Always been fond of this movie. I deeply love Connery trying to navigate his way on a computer terminal. More seriously, I dig how the corporate malfeasance is so systemic that science fiction just has it in its DNA now.

I love @mangiotto.bsky.social’s review. Joachim Trier is a gift to film. I often think, when I’m gone, about any kind of legacy I may have, and then I realize my legacy is in other places, waiting for me. SENTIMENTAL VALUE is an amazing film.

She scratches a letter into a wall made of stone
Maybe someday another child won’t feel as alone
As she does it’s been two years and counting,
Since they put her in this place,
She’s been diagnosed by some stupid fuck
And mommy agrees, yeah!

SENTIMENTAL VALUE: An estranged father tries desperately to reconnect with his daughters but can only do it through cinema and artifice. Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas are tremendous. A subtle, delicate, beautiful film.
