Towards the Afropastoral: What NOPE Says About the Black Western
Towards the Afropastoral: What Nope Says About the Black Western
Jordan Peele's 'Nope' refashions the Western as a genre that tells a story of American erasure by its survivors.

The movement is extraordinarily disciplined, despite escalatory rhetoric, threats, & violence against the movement, immigrants, and observers. Over 99% of reported protests featured no arrests, 99.8% had no participant injuries or property damage, and 99.9% reported no injuries to law enforcement.

In 1933, rather than collaborating with the Nazis in order to continue acting, Veidt and his Jewish wife emigrated to Great Britain a week after their marriage, eventually settling in Hollywood & frequently making anti-Nazi films in both countries. He died at 50, a year after his role in CASABLANCA.

“Oh no I had to pay 500 million in taxes!” to Elon Musk would be the same as you or me saying “Oh no I had to pay $58 in taxes!”

To be fair, that would be like $230 to Jeff Bezos, poor guy
Try picturing it this way:

If you had Elon Musk’s current net worth ($857 billion), spending a million dollars is basically equivalent to you or me spending about 12 cents.

So any time you hear that he just spent (or lost) $10 million, try to remember that’s like what $1.20 would be to us.
It absolutely sucks that, in addition to everything else they benefit from, billionaires also benefit from our brain’s inability to process/realize how much a “billion” actually is. If you have that much & don’t give at least half of it away—leaving you $500 million!!—your moral compass is broken

I’m past wanting billionaires to pay the same tax rate as my middle class rate, and now want a federal law that for every billion you accrue each year, you have to give 1% of that directly to the arts and/or education. Don’t worry, billionaires, that still leaves you with 990 million dollars

Co-written by sexologist & pioneering LGBTQ advocate Magnus Hirschfeld—and made during a brief censorship-free era in Germany—DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS intended to rally support to overturn Paragraph 175, a longstanding German law criminalizing homosexuality. In response, new censorship laws arose.
New today on the site!

“A Language for Loneliness”

- Laura Evers on Conrad Veidt and the 1919 German film, DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS, which was banned by German censorship laws in 1920
Different from the Others (1919): A Language for Loneliness
By developing subtle material techniques to depict loneliness, Different from the Others moves beyond sentimentality.

I cannot stress enough how much these kinds of notes mean to teachers.

Or anyone, really. If someone has made a positive impact on your life, reach out and let them know. It'll make their week.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson’s musical inspired music video for Fiona Apple’s “Paper Bag” - I swear there used to be rumors long ago that they’d make a full on musical together, but alas this will have to do! (His video for “Hot Knife is fantastic too)

Sorry, had to get that out of my system—but don't worry, as long as you're not using AI, I feel like I'm a pretty easy person to pitch! If you *really* want to write a thing, and can really write, I'm all ears, almost always. 16 years of doing this and a good pitch still absolutely makes my day.
Yes, we have received your AI drafted pitches and yes we can tell they are AI and no we won’t be replying to those, you are wasting your time friendo

This feels like something that many people paid a lot more money than most of us should have been able to spot before the Patriots 23rd game, & honestly something most high school coaches would probably see on tape?

That shit ain’t gonna get by the beautiful mind of Mike Macdonald though 🤷‍♂️
Devon Witherspoon revealed in a radio interview that Mike Macdonald identified from film study that the Patriots offensive linemen were effectively tipping their pitches with their stances.

Put that in the pantheon of Super Bowl coaching contributions.
