Sometimes, you just need to hear the words “There’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”
The way this could apply to just about any industry at the moment.
It’s so cool to have hitched your wagon 20 years ago to an industry that was booming beyond anyone’s expectations and have it turn out to be stripmined and utterly hollowed out by Shareholder Value, and every other industry you could slot into has been, surprise, hollowed out by Shareholder Value

On Stranger Things eve, let’s take a moment to look back at the twists that *didn’t* happen — thankfully for all of us.

My latest for ComicBook:

5 Abandoned Stranger Things Twists That Would've Made The Show So Much Darker (Or More Absurd)
Stranger Things' writers planned several dark twists that didn't make it into the Netflix series, and that might be for the best.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

It’s not often that I write a cover letter and think, hey, that was good, after — but today is one of those rare instances, and I am embracing it.

Maybe instead of spending billions of dollars to shove unnecessary AI into everything, tech companies could spend $10 to innovate updates not resetting all of your settings.

What pisses me off is that the AI bubble WILL fucking pop and drag the economy down with it and the industry will inevitably get bailed out, which is honestly such a great long con.
Here's why concerns about an AI bubble are bigger than ever
Tech companies are pouring billions into AI chips and data centers. Increasingly, they are relying on debt and risky tactics. Financial analysts are worried there's a bubble that will soon pop.

If you’re a journalist who’s still on Twitter, from now on in your writing you have to replace “the American people want” with “troll bots in Eastern Europe demand”

Being there makes your judgment suspect. I don’t care how savvy you think you are, you’re marinating in a disinformation campaign.

Putting aside how much they hate us all, what does this even accomplish?
US Congress voted 285–98 to condemn "socialism." 88 Democrats joined Republicans, including Hakeem Jeffries.

What they mean by socialism is your access to healthcare, housing, safety regulations, and anything that benefits you instead of the oligarchy. There has been no vote to condemn fascism. #3E

A great thread about why the AI hype is so overplayed.
Short 🧵: One thing I don't see discussed regarding the whole likely implosion of the AI bubble is that Silicon Valley brought this upon itself by profoundly misunderstanding where human beings are at right now.

This is so annoying and gross on Google’s part, but I will be turning that shit off anyway.
Turning off the AI in Gmail causes your account to no longer slit your emails up through Primary, Promotions, and Social. That's because Google is a petulant little bitch who doesn't like that you told them to fuck off with their bullshit slop scam.
