Introducing ** Incendiamoeba **, a eukaryote that can live at temperatures well beyond what we thought possible. 63C!!

Read @hbrappap.bsky.social thread to see what we’ve already started to learn from this amazing organism!

So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

Some archaea—an ancient group of microorganisms—have an entirely novel genetic code, according to a new study in Science.

The findings expand our understanding of how alternative genetic codes evolve and hint at new molecular tools for biotechnology applications. https://scim.ag/4omApQ7
An archaeal genetic code with all TAG codons as pyrrolysine
Multiple genetic codes developed during the evolution of eukaryotes and bacteria, yet no alternative genetic code is known for archaea. We used proteomics to confirm our prediction that certain archae...

Noting the congressional pension is based on service time, it kicks in at 5 years and her retirement date - Jan. 5, 2026 - will be the first business day after she passes five years since her first swearing in. bsky.app/profile/heli...
Any idea why she's quitting then? Her statement isn't very coherent (big surprise), although it would make more sense as an explanation of just not running for re-election.

Mostly me reiterating what was said in the blogpost: this was already policy at many ICs; what is important is not the change away from paylines (which were already a mess) but the quality and integrity of POs/SROs/etc. remains intact

Just going to preemptively say that I don't think it's okay for the US to invade or bomb Venezuela.

The 📌 kinda had a bit of weird feel of social pressure to return and read what was marked.

Now I just bookmark things into the ether, never to be seen again.

This seems like such a simple fact. But for some reason too many of our elected officials have decided that Donald Trump is so, so, special that he can do anything and say anything without consequence.

So here we are.
Any President who calls for the opposition party to be hanged should be immediately impeached and removed from office.

We had to put up with four years of "Hunter Biden".
Like was obvious then, they don't actually care about corruption at all.

RFK Jr had committed to Bill Cassidy, as a condition to win his vote, that he would keep website language.

Cassidy in February: “If confirmed… CDC will not remove statements on their website pointing out that vaccines do not cause autism.”

Trump's economy is being held up by a massive AI bubble.

A recent study found that of 300 companies that owned generative AI tools, 95% reported zero return on their investments.

We will not entertain a bailout of these companies should this bubble pop.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

Universities continue to stain themselves by protecting toxicity of every kind

They don't have to be intolerant but near-universal moral standards can be respected

It's demoralizing to see them constantly jump through hoops to protect professors who break a Uni's own code of conduct/written rules
Larry Summers tells @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social
he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”
