Fun to note that the last pope named Leo condemned the heresy of Americanism (though what he condemned isn’t usually what people think of when they think about the American church’s bad behavior).

Maybe this Leo will condemn “New Americanism.”

yes. For utils (at Chicago) or the kingdom of heaven (now), hierarchy is good and individual rights are nonsense on stilts.

never forget when Justice Scalia was like, “agree to disagree on the death penalty Holy Father”
will come as no surprise from whar
have said that I do not agree with the encyclical Evangelium Vitae and the new Catholic catechism (or the very latest version of the new Catholic catechism), according to which the death penalty can only be imposed to protect rather than avenge, and that since it is (in most modern societies) not necessary for the former purpose, it is wrong. That, by the way, is how I read those documents-and not, as Avery Cardinal Dulles would read them, simply as an affirmation of two millennia of Christian teaching that retribution is a proper purpose (indeed, the principal purpose) of criminal punishment, but merely adding the "prudential judgment" that in modern circumstances condign
retribution "rarely if ever" justifies death.
(See "Catholicism & Capital Punishment," First Things, April 2001.) I cannot square that interpretation with the following
passage from the encyclical:

Now I have to share this anecdote from David Graeber about what happens when you give an anarchist group a car
The DAN car caused a minor, but ongoing, crisis. We soon dis- covered that legally, it is impossible for a decentralized network to own a car. Cars can be owned by individuals, or they can be owned
by corporations (which are fictive individuals), or by governments. But they cannot be owned by networks. Unless we were willing to incorporate ourselves as a nonprofit corporation (which would have required a complete reorganization and an abandonment of most of our egalitarian principles) the only expedient was to find a vol- unteer willing to claim to be the legal owner. But then that person was held responsible for all outstanding fines and insurance fees, and had to provide written permission to allow anyone else to drive the car out of state. And, of course, only he could retrieve the car if it were impounded. One courageous activist did agree to under- take the responsibility, but as a result, weekly meetings were over- whelmed by reportbacks about his latest legal problems. Before long the DAN car had become such an endless source of tribulation that we decided to organize a fundraiser, throwing a big party where we provided a sledgehammer to anyone willing to pay five dollars to
take a whack at the thing.
