A blanket of silence covered the ships, interrupted only by the subtle swoosh of wings and the plop of blood on wood as it trickled down blades and claws. Nitara let her arms drop and her senses expand, searching the vessel for any rebels in hiding. Nothing; they were all there sprawled out on the deck, some groaning in pain, others unconscious, but most enshrouded by Envasar’s mantle. Perhaps some would live and find redemption after the Shadow Priestesses interrogated them. Nitara let herself believe that lie for all of a second. Once more, her crew had executed their mission to perfection. But no one was celebrating.

She could only have achieved it by becoming Veilbound: a creature who walked the thin line between life and death, drawing their power from both. Yet Sareena was different from every Veilbound Ashrah had met and killed. Not a knight claiming to defend the living or a sorcerer obsessed with the power of the dead, but an assassin of the shadows with untold tricks up her sleeve.
