Together, they flew across the city, the wind on their wings and the moons shining above. Niumbra’s blooms reached their full glow on the rooftop gardens, the purple inherited from the larger moon radiating from the flower’s core in a smooth gradient. Nitara glided past a floating platform carrying a new statue in honour of Coloct, the nensii who had earned the title of Faithful Spear after impaling the eye of the giant devil, Ro'karel, who invaded Vaeternus and destroyed three entire cities before Coloct banished it back to the Netherrealm with a spear stuck in its pupil. A sign from Envasar, the captain knew, and offered a quick prayer. Just like Coloct, she would save her realm from a vile fiend.

Ahead, the Obsidian Wings Academy blended in with the mountain atop which it was built. Unlike the other major buildings in Orasan, the Academy dispensed with the sky-reaching, spindly spirals and fancy stained-glass windows in favour of thick towers encircled by warriors sculpted into an eternal vigilance, onion domes, and rounded rather than pointy arches.

Upon hearing that and the dreamy sigh that followed, Voran quietly went around the ship reinforcing his protective wards. Nitara’s misgivings about the priest had vanished after an abasam’shim, an enormous, flying eel-like demon with the most nightmarish mouth she had ever seen, charged against the Moonlight Storm only to be vaporised by Voran’s holy shield before any of its teeth or corrosive saliva could dent the ship. And before the priestess could even snap out of her shock at the sight of the demon.

Sayzda had expressed deep regret at being unable to collect any parts of the abasam’shim to study, and Nitara preferred it this way. Bringing demonic pieces onto her ship wasn’t an idea she was comfortable with, least of all when she would be putting them in the hands of a too-enthusiastic demonologist.

A glint in her eyes that told him she was asking. The idea was already set in her mind about where to place the cord above the newly built crib, some quiet hope it might bring good luck or protection. As advertised, Kano thought, the lopsided smirk shining through again as he picked out a handful of koins from the leather pouch. Letting it slide into her palm to keep, the stray gold not flashing in the shade as he pocketed the smaller amount. For once in his time in Outworld, there was honesty in the transaction, no haggling, no thieving.

“Wards off evil, does it? For that price, it’d bloody well better…” Kano muttered, lacking a real edge to his voice when he said it. What was more laced with humor than disagreement. “Didn’t think the cure to our problems was a dinky little rock.”
