Wowee. New favorite American novel: THE PASTE-POT MAN by Edwin Lanham. Lanham was pals with Bob McAlmon and Kay Boyle in Paris in the 1920s (was briefly married to Boyle's sister!) and became a modestly successful mystery/crime writer and screenwriter. TPPM a late-life roman a clef.

Damn, what a cast!
Obscure Brit comedy of the day: 1998'sWHAT RATS WON'T DO never made it to the U.S., but it has cool cast: Natascha McElhone (RONIN, SOLARIS TRUMAN SHOW), James Frain, Samantha Bond (Ms. Moneypenny), Peter Capaldi & Charles Dance star! Directed by Alastair Reid.

I just donated to Aftyn Behn, imo your dollars go far in a low turnout special like this, and this is a great time to help them get what they need to close. Throw her a few bucks if you’re inclined, and if you know anyone who lives in Nashville/Central TN, give them a friendly reminder to vote!

Emerson finds TN-7 basically ~tied ahead of Tuesday election, with Trump underwater in a district he won by 22.

A winnable race for Dems.

If R’s lose this race their ability to control the House *this year* is a real issue.

Dems need to keep repeating it, and they need to say what mean. “You can refuse illegal orders,

examples of illegal orders are: intentionally harming or targeting civilians, engaging in unauthorized domestic LE actions, falsifying records, or anything else that clearly violates the US constitution”

It’s as if he writes about people and institutions as he wants them to be, not as they are. And he is totally unaware of his blind spots. www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...

so if i understand this correctly, gaines has made her career by publicly calling trans athletes predators and threats to women while completely failing to ever mention even once that her mentor/college swimming coach was sexually assaulting and harassing women on the team while she was there?
Riley Gaines climbed the MAGA ladder by vilifying trans women in sports. Now, teammates are speaking out about the real problems on her team: abusive coaching, sexual harassment, eating disorders. ow.ly/o3wq50XuCzp

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚
