If you need a whistle in Somerville, stop by Gracie’s. If you need A LOT of whistles that’s probably ok too.

Thinking about this today.

“It also means more than simply living. It means our lives are made so much better now that they actually feel worth living— that the change that gender-affirming care makes possible isn't just about life or death, it's about a vibrant life instead of the absence of one.”
In defense of trans quality of life — Jessica Kant
Today trans people exist in an atmosphere where it has become normal for strangers to demand of us that we extemporaneously provide inarguable, indisputable proof that without very safe medical care w...

i talked about Alice Wong's death in therapy today and my therapist described her as someone who "lit others up." i just find that so apt as a descriptor for who i experienced Alice to be. may she rest in love, knowing that her light continues to shine on in so many of us.

ICYMI: I spent a week with an illustrator in Connecticut’s only immigration court, where judges decide whether thousands of people each year can stay in the U.S.

We found few lawyers, long backlogs and lessened transparency.

reminder: please only share info about ICE presence that has been confirmed & verified by you and/or a trusted source. inciting fear & panic can prevent people from seeking needed care & getting essential resources. it's important that we share info, but it's important that we do so responsibly.

In sorting my own thoughts about the moment, I began writing about the way science is being used by bad actors under the guise of "evidence-based medicine". I also talk about the limits of our ability to fully boil down evidence into axioms that make subjectivity irrelevant.
The myth of an apolitical science — Jessica Kant
What we might call the modern anti-science movement, starting with efforts to hide the obvious linkage between tobacco and cancer, and the rise of “climate skepticism”, has grown in scale enormously i...

Why clergy should risk assault to protest ICE

I believe one reason for their disdain for public health is that it is based on and recognizes our interconnectedness as human beings, as inhabitants of this earth, in direct contrast to the dominant culture's emphasis on individualism.
It really seems like this administration is trying to eliminate the field of public health. MPHs and DrPHs will no longer be considered "professional degrees" by the DOE and, therefore, will face limits to accessing federal student loans.

Thinking about how we had this whole kerfuffle where the word “cisgender” was banned on multiple platforms despite being a statement of fact, but Ohio can just redefine the word “respectful” and the matter is settled. Gaslighting as policy.

Teen Vogue was seriously committed to diverse and inclusive journalism and their disability coverage was extremely good. This is a big loss and someone better snap this column up!!
It’s been a pleasure working with Lex and everyone in the politics vertical at Teen Vogue. I’m heartbroken that my column, Disability Visibility, is gone. Teen Vogue was one of the few places that published disabled journalists regularly. I just spent the last 2 months working on my next column
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.
