* Pizza rolls are a potent symbol of midcentury USA culture. The guy who sold them was the son of Italian immigrants, born in rural MN, made his first fortune selling frozen Chinese food, then tried putting other things in wonton wrappers...leading to pizza rolls.

Thanksgiving at Dak To, 1967

Nineteen years ago I ate my Thanksgiving dinner off the wheel well of a supply truck at FOB Kalsu, Iraq. As always, I’m thankful I’m not there any more and mournful for the ones who never made it home.

President Trump issued an executive order this year that directed the attorney general to review the placement of 37 people whose death sentences were commuted by Biden. Many are now headed to a supermax prison notorious for its harsh conditions.

Trump officials are retaliating by imposing the harshest conditions in the entire federal prison system, including near total isolation.

Beatrice Russell is called to adventure (by an Irishman from the other world), has companions and aides, and grows in power and skill. This being _The Wire_ she doesnt vanquish the dragon she engages in single combat, but she does return home forever changed
A good personality type test question: who comes the closest to being a legit hero on The Wire?

Obviously, it’s not a show with heroes. It makes damn sure of it. But who you think comes nearest probably says something about your worldview that I would want to know.

Ranked-choice voting didn't *mathematically* change much in Portland, mostly the same people won who would have with FTTP. But it sure did lower the level of rancor a bunch, letting voters have more "expressive power" without worrying about spoilers
i am...skeptical about implementation here state-by-state but it could absolutely strengthen coalition unity and decrease alienation of the primary electorate.

Speaking only for myself, I much prefer the world where the Christian majority *attempts* to be more inclusive vis a vis their Jewish, Hind, etc etc neighbors than the (very recent!) one where everything was explicitly and exclusively Christian.
But as a Christian-cultured atheist, I'm learning the ham-fisted attempts at including Hanukkah in "the Holidays" come off to Jewish people as somewhere between patronizing and gaslighting rather than inclusive.

Some Palestine solidarity people hate Jews! It sucks but it is what it is. We can just tell them to fuck off and not have it change our evaluation of whether Israel is running a genocidal apartheid regime.

IDK who needs to hear this, but protesting outside a synagogue because it's a synagogue is absolutely wrong, but protesting outside a synagogue because it's hosting an info session about how U.S. Jews can buy real estate in Palestinian territories is absolutely fine and good.

—Rep Nelson
—Rep Costello
—Rep Vance
—Rep Allard (from another Republican)
—Rep Coulombe
—Rep Schwanke

Rep. Jason Crow's office is seeking a Capitol Police investigation into Trump for what they described as "intimidating, threatening, and concerning" social media posts.

It's highly unusual for a member of Congress to request a police investigation into a sitting president of the United States.
Scoop: Democrat requests police investigation into Trump over "threatening" posts
"All of these posts are intimidating, threatening, and concerning," Rep. Jason Crow's office wrote.

This was the easiest prediction I’ve ever made
Even better: many of these folks, most notably JA, have made ostentatious shows of loyalty to the Trump administration. And if the previous Trump admin is any guide, Trump’s approval will only drop further between now and Nov 2026.

@lauritadianita.bsky.social ’s thread about MTG from a couple months ago seems especially relevant now
🧵 I have many thoughts abt MTG standing w/ survivors against Trump. While most of it may have to do w/ her feeling used & betrayed by the party as @ericmgarcia.bsky.social explained & tbh likely her anti-Semitism is at play, I also think about survivor solidarity & the commonness of SV x party lines

The ADL probably: "It seems that the Coast Guard made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.

In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath."
