But Rocky understands Adrian differently to other people in the neighborhood. “You know, some people are very shy by nature, you know?” he says to her on their first date, “I say you’re very shy by nature, you know? … You know, some people think that being shy is a disease, but it don’t bother me none.” Rocky, in his own way, expresses support for Adrian rooted in an approximation of the neurodiversity model. He explicitly rejects the pathologizing of her difference (“that being shy is a disease”), positions it as within the natural variance in human cognition (“you’re very shy by nature”), and puts forward a positive outlook on that difference (“it don’t bother me none”).

It is understandable, of course, that Rocky would come to that neurodiversity-rooted conclusion, because he, too, lives outside of the bounds of neurotypicality. Rocky appears to have mild intellectual disability, and possibly other neurodivergences, undiagnosed due to his lifelong poverty.
