if Peadar Tóibín can understand that a high rate of successful appeals on refused disability payments means that lots of eligible people are being refused in the first instance, why can he not understand the same is true for asylum seekers

I will be the first to admit I couldn’t understand why anyone would oppose Assisted Dying… and then I became disabled and had it “offered” to me.

It’s not compassionate when there’s coercion.

It’s not dignified when it’s offered in lieu of care.

Listen to disabled people.

Callaghan’s new “tough on immigration” rules will only affect a tiny proportion of immigrants—who also happen to be among the most vulnerable. The gov know that drastically reducing inward migration would be an act of self harm so they’ll pick on these asylum seekers as an act of performance. Sick

“The rules on family reunification – where members of a successful asylum seeker’s family can be granted permission to join them in Ireland – would be tightened and limited to immediate family members only” Again, this is already the law, FG/Lab government ended FR for extended family in 2015!

Nick Delehanty looked through the integration fund to try to find something to criticise and he picked "rape counselling for refugees who live in rural IPAS centres where it's difficult to access services" because he can use ambiguous wording to insinuate it's something else

if I were someone earnestly interested in improving Ireland's security without eroding our neutrality, I'd make giving the intelligence services a legislative basis – and effective oversight – my number one priority, not abolishing the Triple Lock

moreover, if you are pushing this framing because you think Nigerian Christians should be accepted as refugees, but not any other Nigerians, could I additionally submit that you are a scumbag
if the only way you can convince yourself to give a shit about political violence in Nigeria is by pretending it's all committed by Islamists against Christians, I would humbly submit that you go fuck yourself

Also, none of this is going to make a blind bit of difference to the number of refugees who come here, it’ll just make their lives harder and remember these are people who have already been recognised as needing Ireland to protect them due to persecution in their country of origin. Shameful.

1. Family reunification is ALREADY limited to "close family"

2. Forcing people to avoid claiming benefits they are entitled to and need under threat of being refused citizenship is horrifically cruel. That was the policy under Michael McDowell and it caused great hardship to the most vulnerable.
New: major overhaul of immigration laws to see citizenship denied to those who got welfare, or are in debt. Family reunification only for close family, tighter rules around self sufficiency. Changes to revoke residency for those who commit serious crimes

The Irish Times published and lauded John Collison's op-ed, but did they fact-check it?

Andrew Jackson did. Thoroughly.

If you spent time reading the original, you'd want to give time to this counterpoint as well.

the Irish political and media class need to seriously reflect on how Progress Ireland could have such a crude and insulting assessment of how easy it is to just flash some cash and get your agenda on the agenda in Irish politics, and how objectively correct that assessment was
John Collison was talking utter garbage and it says so much that so many politicians fell over themselves to fellate him for writing a pack of lies

Of course, the government aren't fools, this is not a case of naivety but one of alignment of interests - wealthy investors benefit from gutting oversight and protections, and for the government it's a convenient scapegoat for their own decades long failings
