Dans le jardin des Tuileries, sur la terrasse du bord de l’eau, un magnifique groupe sculpté attire le regard. Cette longue allée rectiligne a été dessinée par André Le Nôtre. Derrière évidemment c’est Le Louvre. Il s’agit d’une sculpture de Paul Landowski. A gauche, Jabel le berger scrute l’horizon, au centre, Jubal, le premier aède, les conduit au son de sa harpe improvisée dans un bucrane, à droite, Tubalcaïn, le forgeron, protège le feu. Les trois personnages représentent selon l’auteur la force de l’humanité en marche : la force physique (le pasteur), la force de la pensée (le poète ou aède), la force du travail (le forgeron). Une inscription les décrit. « N’est-ce pas là toute l’humanité. L’homme des champs, le poète, l’ouvrier des villes » (Journal 1903). Il s’inspire de trois jeunes tunisiens qu’il rencontre lors d’un voyage, marchant ainsi « fraternellement unis (…) marchant d’un seul bloc, sans aucun sentimentalisme ». Il fut initialement installé dans la Cour Napoléon et déplacé en 1984 sur la Terrasse du bord de l’ eau. Le groupe devait figurer sur le parvis du Temple de l’Homme que Paul Landowski voulait réaliser. Selon Romain Rolland, ce projet est le projet « océanique ». Il s’agissait de faire un lieu de méditation accueillant manifestations publiques, spectacles et congrès internationaux. Il incluait une bibliothèque et un cinéma. Elaboré en collaboration avec les architectes Taillens, Bigot et Laprade, il n’a pas été réalisé. Présenté en 1925 à l’exposition des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, il a été envisagé en 1932 pour prolonger l’axe des Champs-Élysées entre la Porte Maillot et La Défense.
