Just finished the best book I’ve read this year. A collection of connected stories about the unique hellscape of our modern world, it is reminiscent of Todd Solondz style cruelty comedy. This isn’t “dark” humour - it’s a pitch black tunnel through the mind of the terminally online and totally alone.
ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.
This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.
"They put me on suicide watch and they put me in the cell, I'm naked, in like a hospital dress and just a concrete bed with like a mattress, like a thin mattress and, they leave the light on 24/7."
Brilliantly written article that does the thing all brilliant writing on our current era does - gives you sudden clarity amidst the strategically numbing and purposefully confusing “flood the zone with shit” firehose we’re all drinking from when we read the news in the US.
"Weiss [is] someone blissfully captured by the richest people alive, and invested in smashing the last vestiges of liberal power in this country: universities, civil servants, and the media. She has a cop's heart and a tadpole's brain."
Back in the US, looking forward to the TMJ that goes with reading headlines like “Trump says school shootings wouldn’t happen if kids were armed” and then just having to go on with your day and buy lunch that comes in a plastic container with a plastic knife and fork individually wrapped in plastic.
Yeah both parties need equal scrutiny for sure. The one that currently controls all branches of government, and is kidnapping and terrorizing people democrat cities as a form of punishment and also the one that sits on the sidelines making polite but muted pleas to follow the law.
If I had read this when I was 15 years old, I would have died one of those mysterious sudden deaths where they never find out the cause, like in The Ring. “But how could all his blood just POUR OUT OF HIS EYES?!” my mother would sob, pounding on the kitchen table as a tenacious journalist looked on.
After reading The Houseguest, I’ve now finished another great book of horror short stories by a Latina author, this time from Argentina. A Sunny Place For Shady People is scary in its own unique way. It’s about unhappy people and the stories they tell themselves - it just happens to involve ghosts.
This movie was sometimes painful to make because it reflected the grief I was feeling losing three people I was very close to. Disease is cruel and random. Thanks to Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner for bringing that pain to life so beautifully.
One great thing about being in Melbourne has been catching up with so many of the incredibly talented people who brought Wolf Man to life. I’m so proud of what they did. From Stefan Duscio’s beautiful cinematography to Ben Wallfisch’s haunting score and Ruby Mathers’ intricate production design.
For his latest Unloved series, @honorszombie.bsky.social reevaluates the 2019 remake of THE GRUDGE and this year’s WOLF MAN, exploring how they’re both "gory, widescreen odysseys about desperate people pushed into extranatural mysteries, breaking the chains of torment.”
Have I ever told you guys that I love Melbourne? I have? Well I do. I love it. This city is in my bloodstream. Also, in my opinion, it’s the best food city in the world.
Timeline cleanser. Seeing this track played live in 95 ripped my head off, could be responsible for the brain damage that led to my current career. Sending love to our Kiwi friends.
Went to the HorrorHound convention in Cincinnati last weekend and it was very humbling and fun to look people in the eye who appreciate what I do. There were married couples who met in Saw chat rooms! If you can make something that affects people, then you can’t ask for much more as an artist. Hugs.
Oh shite, it seems like the same sentient puddles of afterbirth that caused me to delete Twitter have slithered over to Bluesky. I knew it would happen eventually.
So many things I love about Australia but the main thing right now is that whole days go by without thinking about FuckFace. I am not sure I can adequately describe to Americans how blissful it is to go on with your day without a migraine induced by an all caps tweet about “LOSER” talk show hosts.
I at least thought we would’ve gotten one extremely loud, raw, vitriolic, classic album out of all this bullshit. Literally no one is going to write a song aimed at all the obscenities we see every day in the news? Just sticking to songs about the complications of love in your twenties then? Got it.
Just got off a plane in Australia, turned on my phone and see that the constant, slow slide into a dystopian dictatorship in the US continues unabated.
