No new money for nature restoration, a static heritage budget and nothing meaningful to fix our rivers, lakes and estuaries.

My response to heritage, nature, water measures in the FFG/Ind. first budget. #budget26

The Taoiseach creates a false choice here. Climate Action is about making life better, making energy cheaper, making our atmosphere cleaner.
But that requires leadership. We see none from this Government.

Deadline closes in a short time for submission on the River Bride (Blackpool) Drainage Scheme.

Here's my submission, outlining the environmental, social and urban planning impacts of the project — that won't benefit households and businesses affected in Blackpool.

😱 Mr O’Brien also signalled that bus and rail commuters could face fare increases to pay more for the expansion of services.

😱VAT reduction will cost the State €681m per year.

On Budget 2025, I can’t accept that greater consideration continues to be given to landlords over young people — students and hardworking young workers alike. There are still no real or encouraging solutions to the housing crisis. We need stronger leadership to take control of our housing market.

Posting for other commuter cyclists in #SpeirGorm

Cycling Ireland is the only place I know to offer third-party insurance to commuter cyclists in Ireland.

It comes as part of membership and works out about 70–90c per week depending on options. Cheaper if you book between now and the end of 2025.

🏠Having a warm place to live should not depend solely on a landlord's decision.

❗We need a Government strategy to ensure that everyone benefits from this retrofit revolution with increased incentives and minimum BER standards for rental properties.

Thanks Liudmyla Bortok and the Cork Independent for reporting my comments on this week's budget for Cork.

The Taoiseach called it "transformational". In fact, a list of half-finished projects. No mention if what was started by the Green Party will be completed for commuters by this government.

Thanks to Peter McCarthy and the Irish Independent for reporting my comments on apartment building in the city.

A majority of homes commenced construction since 2021 are now for apartments. As planners and city councillors, we need to change our outlook on where and how people want to live.

Grateful for the cross-party support at today's launch of World Vacant Homes Day outside Leinster House in Dublin.

The greenest home is the one that's already built. Vacancy and dereliction blight communities across our cities, towns and rural areas.

🏡 On this first ever #WorldVacantHomesDay, we highlight one of the biggest contradictions of our time: too many homes without people, too many people without homes.

🇪🇺 EU countries must prioritise renovating & reallocating vacant houses for social housing.
There is no place like home.
Yet too many of them are vacant. It’s not only a housing crisis, it’s also a vacant homes crisis.” The graphic shows bar charts comparing the national percentage of vacant homes (yellow bars) and the percentage of vacant homes in capital cities (dark green bars) across several European countries. The countries shown are the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain. A line marks 50% on the y-axis. Here's background to that local budget "spoof" last year — that ended up costing small businesses.

TLDR; FF/FG promised not to raise rates in an election year. So in order to balance the budget, they cut rebates to smaller businesses, who ended up paying more than if rates had been increased. 🤬

The entire budget for BusConnects in Cork (plus a little more). 🤦‍♂️

In Cork City Council, we will be bringing in targeted rates rebates for smaller businesses — after FF/FG removed them last year, after tying themselves in knots in pre-election promises.

Lessons not learned by their higher-ups.

It's official. They're giving big restaurant chains a massive tax cut, costing nearly €700m in the #VAT cut to hospitality.
