wild that austria thinks this is a good idea but ok
as a black comedy, someone should write a version of WWI leadup that has social media. Don't bother about incongruity of fitting 21st century social media tech into early 1900s. Just imagine what it would have been like

Yes, the screeching sound you’re hearing across the continent is Europe’s far right performing U-turns on Trump. One to watch: the UK’s Nigel Farage (“under the weather”’ yesterday).
Here is only at first paradoxical reaction I believe we will see more of - AfD member of the Bundestag Kay Gottschalk argues the US tariffs over Greendland call for more European sovereignty, a European military alliance, a German nuke and ends his video with the slogan "Long live Europe".

Feels like something cracked today in the transatlantic alliance. Europeans have been swallowing their pride, bitting their tongues, and bending the knee. That strategy may have bought them time but it has now clearly failed. It also had a major cost - it has made the WH think Europe will cave. 1/

Manfred Weber, the leader of the EPP, says the approval of the EU-US trade deal should be "put on hold" in response to Trump's 10% tariff threat.

Until today, the EPP, the largest group in the European Parliament, wanted to move forward with ratification despite the Greenland tensions.

This may seem funny and can easily be dismissed as it's just Leavitt being Leavitt. The genuine problem is that in a global crisis where words matter and are a part of escalation management, no one can believe what the United States says, or trust what they hear from the WH.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says the Danes agreed to form a working group to discuss the surrender of Greenland to Trump. "No we didn't" says the Danish foreign minister, indeed "there will be no discussion of turnover." www.berlingske.dk/indland/det-...

Arnold Schwarzenegger did this in Terminators. It works.
Germany sends troops to Greenland.

Germany has seen this movie before.

They played the bad guys then.

They want a different role in the sequel.

Rarely have I been so in agreement with every word in a newspaper editorial as with Helsingin Sanomat's take on Trump and Greenland. I understand the need to thread somewhat carefully in international relations, but our national interests are found in supporting Denmark if Trump forces the issue.

Hear, hear! Excellent column (wouldn't expect anything less by Oscar).
USA:s anspråk på Grönland skakar Nato. Även då Nato kvarstår som vår huvudsakliga lösning vill USA minska sin närvaro i Europa.

Vi behöver bygga både en plan B och plan C redan idag. Ny kolumn i DN, länk nedan.

Someone please fund Tapani - I've been getting weirdly invested in Ugandan wasps ever since I started being active on Bluesky.
I just spent an hour hunting through old fly, butterfly etc papers to confirm that Victor van Someren collected insects in Meru, on the foot of Mount Kenya, in July 1943.

I'd say "they actually pay me for this", except I'm not funded ATM. 😎

When the Swedish MoD a few months ago asked a room full of military thinkers (uniformed and civilian) how Swedish rearmament could be sped up, a strong message was the message "Take risks and focus on the goal" needs to be backed up by actions.

Okay, so we ended up on the timeline where we need to talk about the US possibly invading Greenland. What should Europe (and Finland) do?
In Defence of our Neighbours, Pt. 2
With the threat of US invading Greenland becoming more realistic, what should Europe do about it?

Venezuelan Echoes in the Arctic, Pt. 1

The US raid on Venezuela isn't good, but not necessarily because of how it will impact Chinese and Russian behaviour, but because of what it says about the US.

With commentary such as this, it is pretty clear that the UK is fully prepared to throw Denmark under the bus to preserve its "special relationship". Unfortunately they're most probably not the only country in NATO with that attitude.
Jeez. Greenland is in the NATO alliance. How hard can this be?

The US has loads of military installations in Europe. It likes to pretend this is for Europe’s protection, but this is only partly true. Ramstein, as mentioned here by the Greens’FP expert is a good example. If the US decides to attack Greenland, throwing out US mil installations should be discussed

*Update*

In a surprise move, the combat air vehicles (UCAVs) and other large UAVs which I had expected were for the nearby Type-076 assault carrier have instead been loaded onto the converted merchant ship which has missiles, CIWS and radars in shipping containers. China....

Some great news from the last year - Finland restoring streams (i.e. purging old dams and other constructions blocking fish) at a good rate, arctic fox and Saimaa ringed seal had a good year, even China is getting their emissions under control.

Always nice to see some good news as well 👍
