With Gripen for Canada in the headlines and with Rafale and Gripen seeing LoIs from Ukraine, the Finnish experience has been used as an argument by all sides - some claims more grounded in reality than others. I explain what we really learned during HX.
Canadian Concerns – Finnish Findings
The lessons of the Finnish HX programme brought with it a number of lessons which are again relevant with the Canadian discussion regarding Gripen and F-35. Also discussing Gripen and Rafale in Ukraine.

Stand by for the 13th Russo-Turkish war 😶

...on a more serious side, let's see what the outcome is. For the security guarantees to work, that means being prepared to fight Russia over their aggressive ideas in Ukraine, something which the West consistently has denied when discussing no-flight zones
After the meeting of the Coaltion of the Willing, Emmanuel Macron announces the creation of a working group to "precisely" finalise the security guarantees for Ukraine.

It will be led by France and the UK and include Turkey and, "for the first time," the United States.

This was interesting, good that someone told us Finns, otherwise we might have thought that our authorities doing serious studies and discussing starting to use ties capable of being converted to standard gauge at a later date might have meant the option is on the table ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

This has largely been my continuous reaction since the start of the year.

...and regardless of how Trump I went and the moral question of signing up to work for him with what we knew back then, I must say this last year has increased my respect for the "adults in the room" back then 😶

I’m not sure why the market feels US distancing itself from a Europe that risks being left to defend themselves on their own against an expansionist neighbour who just was rewarded for a war of aggression would worsen the outlook for European defence companies, but I guess that’s one point of view
Oil, gas & European defence stocks fall in response to US support for the plan.
- @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu says will “discuss the situation both w European leaders & w other leaders here at the sidelines of the G20”
- @eucopresident.consilium.europa.eu says plan not been "officially" shared with EU

There's a lot that's really bad in here, and there's even more that is too vague for this to be more than a first draft providing the basis for negotiations, but I must say I am somewhat surprised by Russia compromising on a number of points, including frozen assets and Ukrainian EU-membership.

This will surely surprise most Americans today, but historians have recently discovered that before Donald Trump, it was actually incredibly rare for a president to demand the public execution of this political opponents and press critics.

Kind of them to take a picture of the fine print, so it is easily identifiable as an MGM-140E (500 kg unitary warhead, range of 300 km).
Missile debris confirms Ukraine launched ATACMS at Russia’s Voronezh region on Nov 18, the first time under Trump presidency. The Russian MoD says S-400 and Pantsir systems intercepted part of the salvo. Ukrainian sources say a military training ground was struck, with some missiles downed.

The irony gets deeper in that A26 could have been the German bid (okay, not really, but still, that was one of their yards).
The UK apparently favoring both Hanwha's bid for submarines in Canada and the Swedish effort in Poland appears to cause a bit of a stink with Berlin. Supposedly this is about Babcock having a stake in both programs. Anyway.

I know everyone thinks what they are used to is the obvious answer, but I can't help to point out that in Finland we get a small folded paper where you write the number of the candidate, and the meter long paper that lists all candidates and their numbers is on the wall in the inside of the booth.

there's a lovely James C. Scott line about how "the same mechanisms can be used to track cholera or round up Jews"
Bureaucracy is essential to freedom, it’s just hard to see this because not only can it enable tyranny, the mechanisms that make freedom possible superficially resemble tyranny as well. Postal services and secret police alike keep standardized registries of the names and homes of the citizenry.
Look it's weird to say "the city is liberation. Bigness is liberation. Bureaucracy is liberation." But it so often is. The village is inherently tyrannical. Sherly Jackson knew this.

Someone threw a spanner into the joyous Swedish news about up to 150 Gripen E for Ukraine. Now just waiting for the LoI for 100-150 Eurofighters 🙃

TBH, currently neither is funded, and the winner will likely be the one to first secure funding, which then will take at least the major share of orders

Not rare to see workers shift from labour/social democrats to right-wing populists, while at the same time the green-left consolidating (though as seen in other countries, there's nothing that says the move will be permanent, nor that a liberal/right-wing party couldn't bag some of the green voters)
3) Politically, Labour's 2024 voters are abandoning them for both the Greens and Reform. At the same time, Reform are holding on to most of their voters and attracting lots of 2024 Conservative voters. Full data here www.ipsos.com/en-uk/labour...

A fascinating detail was that in the immediate aftermath of the battle, an engineer from a passing merchant vessel stole one of the cartridge casings from the SMS Schleswig-Holstein (and two smaller ones from the land-based artillery). The souvenir was then used as a pole for mounting his mailbox.
