Episode Four is now out wherever you get your podcasts!

Give it a listen for amusing discussions on made-up slurs, and much less amusing discussions on how a religious studies dissertation from the 70s was turned into a book whose transphobic policy prescriptions are largely followed today.

Listening to the Cracked Ivory podcast and it's pretty good, although I'm slightly confused about why the hosts keep calling themselves Resident Evil lesbians. RE hasn't even come up yet across the first couple episodes. When are they gonna talk about Jill x Rebecca??

anyway people should listen to @crackedivorypod.bsky.social it's a good podcast, even if it doesn't bring up Resident Evil as often as they indicate they might. They haven't even talked about how transmisogynistic Code Veronica is, smdh. But other than that, good podcast

I find Cracked Ivory an excellent way to 'do the reading' when you're—like me—too bimbo-brained to actually wrestle with academia. You get a lot of laughs plus enough tidbits that you can hold your own in a conversation about Raymond (without going "oh, the smug cat villager in Animal Crossing?")

Talia and Emma dissect 'The Transsexual Empire', a foundational text for the GC movement. They discuss the history of radical lesbian feminism, the embattled discourse over trans women's place in it, and the way trans-exclusionary 'radfems' codified a feminist pretext for bigotry.

Link to an actual good, feminist podcast that's co-hosted by a trans woman of color, and which doesn't charge people to guest on it. bsky.app/profile/crac...

rly got to thank @crackedivorypod.bsky.social for ctrl+f ctrl+r'ing gender cr*tical with gender conservative in my brain bc like. a single word change unmasks so much of like. what those freaks over there in GCland are about and makes it so much easier to explain to people

Well okay, but I'm still not going to do more homework for this one.

Unless there's something that seems reeeeeally interesting or stupid or both. Then maybe.

Our Patreon-exclusive companion episode to 'Female Masculinity' is out now!

Emma, Isaac and Talia discuss Jack Halberstam's fixation on the homoeroticism of the men's bathroom to answer the most fundamental Marxist question: is pooping in private bourgeois? We descend into despair for another hour!

And what are the odds of that?

It always felt to me like portions of several hundred words each to express important principles like "trans people are the real hegemonic group if you think about it."

I guess if I wanted to say shit like that I wouldn't say it directly either.
taliabhatt.itch.io
It's going to take a second take though because this book is genuinely unreadable ...

She does talk about Hijra at some point, but only in a way that links them to drag queens.

The homonationalism thesis makes an important if by now trite point: queerness, like feminism or anything else involving marginalised/oppressed groups, can get used as a cudgel e.g. justifying military action.

It didn't need book length to say it, and it filled that space by dismissing queerness.

Funny story: Almost every major work in queer academia is transmisogynistic!

This is a very good podcast and it feels like when me and my friends rip apart some modern news/law.

Well, I don't know if I can definitively answer that, but let me put it like this: "Terrorist Assemblages" is going to be the topic of a future @crackedivorypod.bsky.social episode ;P

@taliabhatt.itch.io Do you have any idea if Jasbin Puar is transphobic? I just looked into "Terrorist Assamblage" and it looks like she is doing a complete erasure of transsexuality.

Let this be a lesson to all Cracked Ivory listeners who get tempted to read up on the episode topics:

DO NOT DO THE HOMEWORK.

This way lies madness.

They are the Trans Academy Nostalgia Critics for a reason.

They read it, so you don't have to. YOU DON'T HAVE TO. SAVE YOURSELF.

In his attempt to respond to C&HD, Halberstam essentially just demonstrates exactly what they're talking about. A "trans studies" academic who becomes absolutely furious at any attempt to deviate from the norms established by the field, while vaguely gesturing at antinormativity as justification.

This is just some absolutely vile transphobia and lesbophobia. Indistinguishable from TERF vitriol about the inescapable burden of womanhood that transition can never overcome.

Jack Halberstam, repress all your life if you want, but stop making it other people's problem.

This is the point where Halberstam's criticism shifts explicitly from the article to Chu as a person

I legitimately did not know where this came from, having only read After Trans Studies from Chu before this point. I assumed it must be an interpersonal beef or lore I've not run into yet.
