An automaton / mechanical diorama I've been working on for a while! A young aviator in her study room, dreaming of the next adventure. :)

Made from paper mache, wood & brass, painted with acrylics. Operated by turning a wooden crank. Still needs a few touchups but the mechanism is working smoothly!

Day 15 of #ArtAdventCalendar - closeup/detail of a mechanical diorama I made. It features a young aviator studying her maps, surrounded by clouds and an airplane which move when a wooden crank is turned (there's a video in my pinned post!)

Paper mache, wood, brass, felting wool, misc. materials. ☁️
A closeup of a diorama in which a young female pilot with an aviator hat and dark brown braids leans over a desk to research her next route. There is a window to a night sky behind her, a candle on the windowsill, and a globe and a stack of books next to her desk. You can also see a red airplane and a cloud on thin brass rods - these aspects of the diorama move up and down when a crank is turned. The diorama is made from paper mache so has an organic and handmade-looking surface, which is painted with acrylics using fairly muted colours.

For Day 14 of #ArtAdventCalendar, this bumblebee bear I sculpted last year! Made from paper mache, coated with silk clay for a smoother surface, painted with acrylic inks.

Solvitur ambulando is my favourite Latin phrase. It means "it is solved by walking".
A photograph I took quite early on New Year's Day, 2019, while walking on the Isle of Purpeck, not long before I did a tweet using it, and the same caption. I imagine it won't have as much impact here, since loads of people have since reused it, and the phrase is now more widely known. It is still very very true, though. Lots of things are solved by walking. Although not everything, obviously.

Day 13

My first outdoor mosaic project, playfully portraying branches of the three cottonwood species that grow native in our river valley. Each ceramic tile was hand cut, glazed and fired, then set in mortar and grout. Fallen leaves were used as patterns.

Belated Day 12 of #ArtAdventCalendar - a photo from Loch a'Choire near the summit of Ben Vrackie last October. The climb was so quiet and almost meditative due to the thick fog.
