Thanks to D9 Supe @jackiefielder.bsky.social and her staff for meeting with us yesterday! We had a productive conversation about housing issues and policies in D9 and beyond, and we look forward to more conversations going forward.

HUGE HOUSING NEWS: The Assembly just passed our bill allowing more homes near public transportation, SB 79!

We need more housing & we need it near transit. It’ll reduce traffic congestion & carbon emissions & increase transit ridership & affordability.

Go housing! Go transit!

@mahdirahimi.bsky.social biked across town at top speed after work just to give that comment!
wafoli.bsky.social
Speaker 150: was at home and couldn’t bear being on the sidelines, Mahdi is in strong support of this plan, appreciates all the work that has gone into it

We love housing and we love festive shirts!
wafoli.bsky.social
Speaker #76: another @d9neighbors.bsky.social member (you can tell by the festive shirts) in support, if we continue to oppose housing, people will continue to be forced out of the city
d9neighbors.bsky.social
Yes, add Bernal to the Family Zoning Plan please!
wafoli.bsky.social
Speaker #75: another speaker from Bernal Heights (they yearn to be added), talks about how many people don’t understand the depth of the housing crisis if they bought a lot time ago, how people used to just make it work, and that’s not the case for young people today

She was!

Speaker #71: @serogers.bsky.social sorry I missed you but I’m sure you were fire like usual!

Speaker #69: Ruth Ferguson talking about the toll not building housing has had on a young person she recently talked with, about how we have argued but not taken action to actually solve our housing shortage

So proud of our members who showed up in force to support this plan at City Hall! #SFFamilyZoning Thank you @wafoli.bsky.social for live-threading the proceedings

*cracks knuckles* we are out here at Planning to support the Family Zoning Plan. It’s the next item up. We were already counterprotested at the rally this morning, so expect a rowdy crowd and lots of comment

Excellent, concise explainer about Builder’s Remedy by @d9neighbors.bsky.social ! Worth a watch AND ALSO a share to your circles.

Aside, not being a D9 resident, it’s amazing how vocal this advocacy group has been about bringing housing to Bernal. D8 could learn a thing or two from y’all! 😻

The program's purpose is to equip young people to advocate for federal affordable housing solutions and drive housing policy change at the federal level. Fellows receive a stipend of $1,000 and travel support to a policy forum in DC.

Cool opportunity alert for our younger members! Apply by September 18 for the Generation Housing Justice fellowship. It's a national fellowship program from the National Low Income Housing Coalition for those aged 18-24.

"We cannot continue to claim we support affordable housing while ensuring it is virtually impossible to build it in our backyards."

Our ask is for Bernal to be included in the Family Zoning Plan, so Bernal can build more badly needed housing. We're excited to keep building momentum around this issue!

We had two productive meetings at City Hall last week: First with Ned Segal, the mayor's chief of housing and economic development, and second with Mace Anderson, legislative aide to supervisor Jackie Fielder.

Thank you to those who hung our window signs in their establishments. We look forward to continuing to work with our neighborhood small businesses on housing issues that impact all of us.

Our members loved speaking with merchants on Cortland Avenue last weekend about the potential of rezoning Bernal Heights. Many were supportive and understand why more neighbors and more community are positive for the small neighborhood businesses we love!

Thank you to all of our speakers! And thank you @wafoli.bsky.social for the amazing live posts that we were able to piggyback off of for this update!

Tying it all together was @bpinsf.bsky.social! He pointed out that housing supports both public services (by providing students for our schools and riders for our transit) and private businesses (by providing customers for our small businesses!)
wafoli.bsky.social
Comment 76: @bpinsf.bsky.social with D9 Neighbors For Housing, more housing yields more opportunity, it does so much to help businesses, schools, transit, it helps protect people it is the community benefit

As @serogers.bsky.social knows, California will lose FOUR or FIVE Congressional seats (likely to Texas & Florida) in 2030 because of our exclusionary housing practices! In a time of crumbling democracy, we should be welcoming those who share our values, not pushing them out!
wafoli.bsky.social
“We’ve been measuring shadows while our democracy burns” is a fire line about California process @serogers.bsky.social

Pro-California and pro-SF talk from our member @serogers.bsky.social!
wafoli.bsky.social
Comment 44: Sarah Rogers, with @d9neighbors.bsky.social, here with her son today, in strong support, and also thinks neighborhoods like Bernal Heights would be a great place to add more homes. California is a place people want to live, SF is, we have prevented them for 50 years due to bad practices
