It's very important, yet difficult, to separate old despicable shit from new despicable shit. "It's totally fine for gerrymandering to be overly political to disenfranchise a political minority" is relatively old despicable shit.

There continues to be a lot of conversation on how astronomers and researchers must “deal” with the existing and incoming pollution caused by satellite constellations.

But I want to see this reframed into asking:

“Why do these companies need this many satellites in orbit?”
By 2040, ~40% of the images from Hubble Space Telescope, and more than 96% from new and future space telescopes like SPHEREx, ARRAKIHS, and Xuntian will be contaminated by internet satellite constellations.

If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Today, after the Coast Guard lifted a ban on swastikas and nooses as symbols of hate, and after President Trump called for the execution of members of Congress, it is time for every American to decide. Who will you be?

Here is Burt Lancaster as Nazi era judge Ernst Janning in Judgment at Nuremberg.

I know it’s hard. But you can’t possibly go to an academic conference that imposes restrictions on freedom of speech like this.
Abstracts submitted to LPSC 2026 are required to comply with White House (non-legally binding) executive orders forbidding mention of topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

At least USRA/LPI isn't hiding it.

But is this what our community wants? Or deserves? I don't think so.

Oh no, this is terrible news. Not-for-profit research is facing a crisis throughout the US.
This is a freaking travesty.
Flagstaff’s Lowell Observatory plans to cut nearly all its research funding and reduce the number of paid science staff to just two positions next year.
