That commentary is so much fun.
My wife and I were watching Altered States for the first time and I missed the first half of the Chiefs game. Looking at this box score—WHAT? Altered States made more sense than this. (Good movie btw)

I love when films open us up to worlds, lives & cultures we previously knew nothing about. June Squibb gets this spot on with her Criterion Closet picks: Buena Vista Social Club and Paris is Burning.

even the democratic consultants are evaluating the democratic party according to the caricatures put out by republican-aligned media
Incredible to claim that “abolish the police” is in any way a Democratic policy
Sam made her spin on Nashville hot chicken sandwich with coleslaw and onion rings. The bold flavors needed a bold film, so we’re watching Akira Kurosawa’s postwar crime movie Stray Dog and drinking a Japanese lager.

I wonder what classic album would make the least interesting making-of of all time, like a real "the whole band was getting along fine but not spectacularly, and they just industriously wrote 12 songs, recorded them without a fuss, and then the record was just as successful as everyone figured."
My criterion order—all 80s save Flow. Also Flow and Spinal Tap are the only films I’ve seen before.

So the blindspots are Altered States, Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling, two films by Claude Berri, Betty Blue, The Signifyin’ Works of Marlon Briggs, Working Girls, and Sid & Nancy.

Also I’d like to give a shoutout to his audiobook recording of Moby Dick, a truly fantastic performance for every character but esp Ishmael, whom he 100% correctly plays as if he were three flagons deep in a tavern and subjecting all within earshot to the longest fish tale of all time
RIP William Hootkins. Thanks for all the memories!

It’s the seamless & un-self-conscious transition between the material & the meta which really defined Jim Henson’s approach to the characters & craft of The Muppets. Post-Jim, both The Jim Henson Company & then Disney have hidden the performer & the magic of performance. A shame.

This is the very first appearance of Dr. Teeth, on March 18, 1975, promoting the upcoming MUPPET SHOW: SEX & VIOLENCE special. It’s remarkable to see how comfortable Jim Henson was both performing & improvising this brand new character, & just how fully-formed he already was...

After leaving HBO Max earlier this year, ‘Looney Tunes’ is a hit on Tubi, the company says, and popular across generations. It should be a model for every classic cartoons trapped in streaming limbo.

Watched Bride of Frankenstein tonight. Not only one of the best sequels ever made, but a fulfilling expansion on the horror of human loneliness. Treats alienation as the profound sorrow that it is - something we'd move heaven and earth to rectify.

if Ford Maddox Ford was an MI6 agent he'd say "My name's Ford. Maddox Ford Ford. Ford Maddox Ford Ford Ford Maddox Ford Maddox Ford Ford" and he'd be killed on his first day
Great movie!
What Lies Beneath is one I go to bat for, the end is a bit too VFX happy, but until then it's a real good slow burner with Ford revealing a surprising viciousness as the heel.
Watching What Lies Beneath tonight and it's a pity that 2000 is thought of as a bum year for Hollywood cinema (especially right after '99) since it really was the last year of movies driven by STARS and not IP or branding. Of the Top 10 grossers only Dinosaur and X-Men truly fall under the latter.

I feel like I owe it to the Springsteen biopic to see it as a thank you for prompting the vault release of Electric Nebraska. That’s the kind of marketing synergy these things never have.

I loved One Battle After Another’s ending on first viewing, but the second time around I realized *how much* is going on in that scene beyond it being a really great car chase. So I had to write something about the brilliance of The River of Hills

What are we doing, Times? (I know what they’re doing, and they’re failing to meet the moment.)
