A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. And like Renée Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter.

I need y’all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.

just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now
Our government is murdering the citizens of this country. They are doing it without any checks on their violence

Breathless reports on Twitter from Project Veritas & fellow creeps of infiltrating ICE watch signals. I thought, Oh, no, they found a couple of jackasses & are going to blow them up. But no, the "conspiracy" is that many people volunteer, take turns on shifts, and train at nonviolence.

Lot of replies saying MAGA’s nothing but astroturf. There is astroturf—O’Keefe’s part of it—but no, it’s not limited to that. I’ve been reporting on it 10 years. Let’s not respond to MAGA’s delusions w/ our own. The fascist threat is real & big; the truth is everyday people democracy can be bigger.

i think this attitude — that all opposition is illegitimate and nothing we do can be questioned— is probably pervasive in the white house and helps explain why they keep making terrible political choices
Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

If yall think this is "crazy" or "outlandish," you should read what those folks in Savannah said to General Sherman in January 1865 after he asked them "what they wanted."

We talk alot about the "40 acres & a mule" part, but that wasn't the whole thing
My most woke opinion is that integration was a mistake. The problem with Separate But Equal wasn't the Separate part, it was the Equal. Because all things being equal, we woulda been just fine without em
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

The kidnappings of Black, Latine, Indigenous, and Asian US citizens are not an accident. They are the leading edge of a wide-scale ethnic cleansing campaign with centuries-old roots that is intentionally targeting not just non-citizens but all people of color.

This is a critical point. What we're really witnessing is the *collapse* of law and order, brought about by Trump's lawless thugs. I think a lot of ordinary people intuitively understand that this is what's happening.
It is hard to explain institutional collapse to voters; videos where state actors are clearly acting in abusive ways explain themselves.
This is incredible: 81% of working class and 83% of young voters have seen video of Renee Good's killing, per new data I've obtained. Majority of working class disapproves of ICE enforcement. ICE brutality is breaking through big time.

Some thoughts on this here:

Part of what's great about Eric Foner's scholarship on this, for our purposes, is that it's about responding to kidnappings in an urban environment!
We are dealing with an institution modeled on slave catching and the great news is that we also have resistance models

This is a great book about the Underground Railroad in an urban environment, New York City:

FWIW I do think it's still important to show up to vote in overwhelming numbers & to clog up the courts as much as possible, but y'all, it's the state that's doing all this stuff. The state will not willingly provide a remedy for its own lawlessness. That's not a legitimate exit strategy.
