Beautifully dramatic lighting effect in this altar depicting the god Sol found near Edinburgh. In the low light of the temple, worshippers would see Sol’s eyes, mouth and the rays of his solar crown glowing.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has *v* strong ‘two years out of Belmarsh after a 35 year stretch for a Republican bombing he didn’t commit; now doing an extended interview with Krishnan Guru- Murthy about his forthcoming book of prison poetry and ‘script talks/improv sessions with Ken Loach’ energy.
I need @harrysword.bsky.social to do one of his semi-regular character portraits, but this time of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Because, well, I mean.

On this #hillfortwednesday a book recommendation: The rampart of Stillfried (Austria). Hellerschmid and Griebl describe the features of the three Urnfield Culture phases and suggest the use of fire to strengthen the timber elements.

What an honour to speak at an event for the Earth Rover Program last week alongside some incredible people, almost none of whom seem to be on BlueSky except for @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

I spoke on soil health in ancient Mesopotamia, and here are some snippets of what I learned along the way

Sneaking Rispain Camp in for #HillfortsWednesday as it is not listed on the Atlas, and we define it as a settlement - but the ditches are absolutely MASSIVE

First thought to be a Roman site, then medieval it was revealed as Iron Age following excavation in the 1970s

Late posting this! You must be on pins. This week: 'The Neolithic Zenith of Stonehenge' covering Stage 1 (c.3000 BCE) and Stage 2 (c.2600 BCE). Were there Welsh bluestones in Stage 1? Is Stage 1 exceptional without them? How did they get to Salisbury Plain? Was Durrington Walls like Burning Man?
