Woke Aristotelian
“Vermeule resembled an American tourist rummaging through a European intellectual antiquities store, picking out a little natural law theory from Aquinas, some Roman materials from a dark corner at the back; he then resold the resulting bricolage under the label ‘classical’ …”

Incidentally I think that one of the issues with Rowling’s portrayal of the Wizarding World is that she’d like to do Tolkien level world building but she has approximately the same world building skills as CS Lewis (“I’m going to take these cool things and that dream, put them together, and stir!”)

Not to pat my profession on the back, for all of our problems, but I do think it's to the law's credit that every US bar association that reviewed Glass' application for a license went "fuuuuuuuuuuuck no."

Another hominin cousin! Nice toes!
The Burtele foot has been puzzling anthropologists for a while - but it looks like there was another australopith living around the same time as Lucy (A. afarensis) - 3.4 Myra - that liked climbing trees a lot more

Afghan translators, Kurds who helped the Turks kill Armenians, Maasai levies who helped Britain conquer Kenya … this story has an awfully familiar ending.

my dissertation was about the history of Catholic converts in the US and every day something makes me remember how often I was told it was too niche
My dissertation turns 10 next month and I've been dipping in to see if there's anything in there worth pulling out and working with, and each chapter is effectively about a different emotional struggle that would be familiar today.

Really thrilled that my second book is now published! It explores the life of Tacfarinas, a C1st AD auxiliary soldier-deserter-bandit-rebel who came to lead a revolt against #Rome in NW Africa during the early reign of Tiberius. He is a truly fascinating figure in #Roman history! 🏺AncientBlueSky

One way I am quite philosophically conservative is I do basically think that knowledge of logic (like the traditional discipline including in its modern mathematical format) makes one better at following and reconstructing ordinary language arguments, and thus should be mandatory for grad students.

Imagine you lived in the 18th century.

Smallpox kills 1 in 3 cases. Yet you can’t culture pathogens, don’t know germ theory, and have no idea what a virus is. How would you invent a vaccine?

In a new episode of HARD DRUGS, we trace the history of vaccines!

Yes. It’s straight up Fanon, which is why I strongly believe no one should be allowed to read Virgil without it to hand
Do you ever think about how the most famous and influential anti-imperial resistance literature in Western history is the Book of Revelation?

Historically, the fascists fled to Brazil, not from it. The times they are a-changing.
Pretty convincing evidence here that the Trump administration was planning to jailbreak and provide asylum for Bolsonaro -- and that Trump inadvertently revealed the plan.

And this, as the now-cliche goes, would have been a paralyzing scandal for any other administration.
Trump appears to blurt out secret plan, not knowing it's already a bust

also if I can Stoicism post just a bit: this is also what memento mori is for. you are going to die someday - do you really imagine than one of your regrets will be that you didn't organize more of your life around what random Redditors think is gay?

bsky.app/profile/maxk...
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.
