Reading request! If you could recommend one text that explored the history of an idea/concept in a riveting and surprising way what would it be? Please re-skeet if you can. I know this is a niche ask.

My essay collection focused on ancient literature and translation will be available for pre-order in the UK in October.

Mzee is good on related matters.

I, er, think it's not the worst thing in the world to find yourself a little less articulate than usual because you're very publicly in love.

The actual bishop of Rome explicitly endorsing bits of liberation theology, so.

He’s an immense gift from the religious right to the left. Let’s hope the religious left can seize it.

it'd be funny if Trump II gave us the rebirth of the social gospel and a woke Great Awakening

South Africa are a genuinely, horribly flaky side. Just can’t see them getting there (either as winners or via the playoff). And, no, KE won’t beat CIV, so they’re more or less in as group winners.

I am strong believer in the opportunity theory of acquisitional crime (not so much violence). People steal if they see a way to do it and think they won't get caught. And in this the rise of Tiktok, etc, and I suspect now AI is fueling the rise of loads of new crime, by making it easy to learn

Chanting, "we are the body of Christ! The body of Christ will be free!"

This crowd has swelled considerably. Few hundred here now.

As a reverend, this guy is both really articulate and politically compelling, and the Robert Redford rugged good looks don't hurt.

A multi-denominational vigil of religious leaders at every ICE facility being protested would also be a powerful political device.

Federal agents aren’t trying to keep the peace. They want violence to escalate so that Trump can declare martial law.

They shot a reverend in the head with pepper balls while he was praying in front of an ICE facility. If that doesn’t tell you where we are as a country, nothing will.

track of others’ mental states) but *that* it is so is not really up for doubt. One way in which setting aside the colonial frame (for liberal-ish reasons because left-coded in the one case; and for self-interested ones in another) has consequences, I guess.

IMHO, the European settler colony is a little foretaste of hell. But even if you don’t think so—even if you think it’s broadly tolerable or even just fine—you’ll have noticed that colonial wars have a very special intensity of hatred. I’m not sure exactly why (maybe segregation means everyone loses

An earlier example:
danielwaweru.bsky.social
A bit like the Emergency in Kenya, when even those who understood that the status quo was unjust just couldn’t get their heads round the intensity of the hatred and violence.
cost me 700 shekels ($185). Saleh, a driver I’d hired in the past, was waiting outside the train station in his car. Soon we were bumping slowly along a narrow, badly paved West Bank secondary road. Every so often, a man wearing a yellow reflective vest would gesture for us to stop, lean in at the open window and mutter in Arabic, “Jaysh. Dir balak.” Army. Be careful. Saleh sighed and said that he’d never seen the situation this bad. He started reminiscing fondly about his youth in the 1980s, which he remembered as a time of freedom of movement and relaxed social contact between Jews and Arabs. I asked him how he’d been since Oct. 7. He stopped smiling and said, with a catch in his voice, “Where did all the hate come from, Lisa? Did they always hate us this much?”
danielwaweru.bsky.social
A slightly overlooked thing is that this was and remains a colonial war with a global audience. Unlike other colonial wars, where the mutual discovery of deeper hatred than either suspected is limited to combatants, the mutual discovery here occurred even among non-combatants.

it was obvious from the moment the attack happened that this was not only a tragedy for Israel but was going to become a tragedy for Palestine, and I still remember who was cheering it on.

If you were online on October 7, 2023, this is no surprise.

Overshadowed by the fact that Israel retaliated with a genocidal war is the reality that amid the attack seemingly professional/moral people spent days praising every report they found of Israelis, including children, being murdered.

'Ah, Mr Coetsee, how nice to see you. At last. I'm sorry we have not got together before.’
He recuperated under very relaxed conditions—he was allowed to visit the main ward next to his private room and several of the (white) patients made reciprocal visits. One day, during this period Coetsee appeared by his bedside. The Minister had made his decision to meet Mandela impulsively after a chance conversation with Winnie, with whom coincidentally he shared a flight to Cape Town. Coetsee and Mandela's conversation was affable if wary. Mandela opened their exchange with a gentle admonish-ment: 'Ah, Mr Coetsee, how nice to see you. At last. I'm sorry we have not got together before." Coetsee was impressed with what he recognised as Mandela's ‘old world values'. Mandela remembered Coetsee as 'very polite'. At one point in their exchange Coetsee told him 'I am interested in your being put in a situation between prison and freedom'.

The twists and turns in the career of the sculptor and painter mirror those of his native country as it left British colonialism behind, writes Samuel Reilly

Compare very low church evangelicals who do not recognize confession, the anointing of the sick and frequently do not recognize communion as anything more than an important memorial service. The preacher/pastor/minister, by whatever title, is fundamentally just Some Fucking Guy.
