The second season of Man on the Inside is not only really funny and touching, but it is also about how wealthy donors affect higher education. I've seen a lot of depictions of academics and this one is probably the most accurate I've seen.
Handing the keys of governance to unqualified billionaires and allowing them to far exceed the proper role of the Executive Branch in dictating to other agencies (i.e. Musk/DOGE) or institutions of civil society (as with Rowan/ Compact) sure does not seem "populist."

Money from the legislature and donors counts as ROI
Provost: "Every academic decision right now will be based on student demand as measured by credit hour production and ROI as measured by earnings after graduation."

Faculty: "What about the new school for civics?"

Provost: "...Except that one."
Centers for “civic discourse” and the study of “leadership” or “democracy” are one of academe's latest and most popular trends. Leaders at some of these centers say student interest is catching up to external forces. https://chroni.cl/4pzUP9m

1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.
Study In The Journal Of Pediatrics Finds Trans Youth Care Lowers Suicidality, Few Detransition
The groundbreaking study found that suicidality dropped for transgender youth receiving hormone therapy by nearly 70%, with only 7 patients of 432 discontinuing treatment.

Well, they seem to have an open door policy for assholes though, don’t they Charlie Brown?
If I show up at your door, Charlie Brown, chances are you did something to bring me there.
I like you, Charlie Brown. That is why I will kill you last.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

This is amazing. A rightwing dark money group did a poll for our (just really dumb) State AG and found her down to an unknown challenger by 7 points. They spent $600k on ads and got her to even in a new poll.

Conservative group attempted image makeover for Brenna Bird
More than a year before the 2026 election, Bird's polling numbers were bad enough to inspire a well-funded outside rescue mission.

The only thing that would make this a better summary of college football is if the players all got NIL money for knife endorsements.
This story sums up college football very neatly: a player stabs two of his teammates (violence is a ubiquitous part of the sport, even internal to the team, even off he field, even encouraged by coaches)… and then the game proceeds as if nothing is out of the ordinary.

Because it isn’t, really.

This song is great and I'm always happy to hear The Time, but this isn't the song to play as a tribute to JellyBean Johnson (RIP). Prince played drums on this.

Faculty will defend academic values unless the faculty on the committees have close ties to the admin and it turns them into lickspittles.
Very simple lesson here:
Faculty governance will defend academic values, like academic freedom, even when it is unpopular.
Political appointees who serve as Regents will blow with the ideological winds, which in Texas are anti-speech.
Texas A&M Was Wrong to Fire Professor Over Gender Lesson, Panel Rules

The firing put the school at the center of national debates over gender identity and academic freedom. A faculty panel ruled unanimously against the termination.

Good morning. I've got a banger new post out today that develops a new method for placing voters on the left-right ideological spectrum, and adds a new, "non-ideological"/affordability axis to usual way we chart & think about US voters (esp swing voters). www.gelliottmorris.com/p/not-just-l...
Not just left vs right: Most voters think about affordability and material wellbeing, not in ideological terms
Most voters want a party that emphasizes cost of living issues and makes the world a better place. Few Americans think in solidly ideologically terms. "Moderates" are mostly non-ideological.

I graduated with a James Beard Award winning chef who became the enemy of every pro-union person in the Twin Cities
Who was in your high school graduating class, +/- two years, that would be of interest?

For example, I took a basketball class and graduated w/all-time 8th man Jud Buechler (look it up), and may have followed Stephanie Seymour (not sure if she still WENT to school after I moved there).

This whole fight is amazing. The goober running this picked a group of grifty right wing scholars to “advise” this grifty “Institute” and our Board of Regents is mad that there are more grifters from Iowa on the advisory board.
The goober in charge of this place called The University of Austin a “top university.” You know, like Princeton and Stanford. I’m not sure they could have found a more embarrassing person to run this rightwing shitshow.

Tenure should end at 65. After that, you get one year contracts.
I know many people in academia have "never retire" brainworms, but my guy is 70, you know he has a bazillion dollars, just go buy a yacht, man. Get a hobby. Ride off into the sunset. Go away.
