National parks have SO MANY people from other countries (since they get real vacations!)

And they spend a lot of money on hotels, food, souvenirs, etc.

This is unbelievably dumb, it will destroy entire tourist towns

Brigadier General Charles Harker, leading a brigade of Illinoisans and Ohioans in Sheridan’s division tried to copy his commanding officer’s stunt but mounted a gun that had just been fired. The red-hot barrel scorched his ass so badly he couldn’t sit a horse for weeks (18

Another USN program stopped short after massive overruns, incoherent design decisions, and changes in strategy. While the PLAN churns out DDGs by the dozen, the USN persists in its quest of the ideal how-so-tailored ship, a perfect metaphor of America’s decline. They’ll all be sunk by DF21s anyway
I applaud the Navy for innovatively streamlining their cancellation of boondoggles sooner in their lifecycle. Much improved over the LCS.

the surface fleet in 20 years is going to be three Zumwalts (still with no guns), the four Fords we could build, a score of LCSes with Patriot TELs welded to the deck, and the prototype Flight XVI Burke, with the displacement of a fully-loaded Baltimore-class gun cruiser.

oh, and Old Ironsides. 🇺🇸

New Paper: Presidential Control of the Civil Service.

Conventional wisdom holds that the civil service sits safely beyond the president's reach. Does it? (1) Not nearly as much as legal scholars think. (2) That's a problem for the execution of the law. 1/12

they ran into the small problem of Alcatraz being designated as a national park by Congress, which would require that the law be repealed, which lol.

but hey, some Trump people got a free Alcatraz tour out of it, so there's that.
Whatever happened to Trump "re-opening Alcatraz"

firing government employees because of their personal beliefs is the weapon of the enemy. we do not need it. we will not use it.

seriously, that's what Donald Trump wants to do. if you are on the left and you want to do the exact same thing Donald Trump wants to do, that is a sign you've lost it.
this is saying nothing of the absolutely deranged idea that he cannot be authentically anti-Zionist if he doesn't purge Zionists of all stripes from city government.

this whole 🧵 is very much worth reading.
A theory about vibes:

Human beings are deeply social creatures. Our need for a legible social order is rooted almost as deeply in our brainstem as our need for basic physical security. We need -- not want, need -- to understand who's in charge, who are allies, who are enemies, *how things work*.

this dumb shit is what i mean when i say this is a purely aesthetic “politics.” yeah man, why can’t we have a fusion of cosmopolitan social democracy and revanchist hierarchies of wealth and privilege? tough question.

The historical reality is that in 1940, fully 45 percent of American families squatted on chamber pots and emptied them into outhouses in the morning, because their homes did not have indoor plumbing.

America was a vastly poorer country in 1939. Nostalgia is just that; nostalgia.

understand the sentiment, but it's important to be realistic about what a Dem majority Congress can and can't do.

They can attach policy riders to budget bills and dare Trump to veto them. They can run 24/7 investigative hearings and subpoena everyone.

They cannot *stop* Trump from running ICE.
if there's a reason to keep up the "tribunals for all involved" discourse one such reason it is to put in stark relief how far away some of the Dem politicking is from the mood on the ground
eric swalwell said on msnow that a major goal of a dem majority after the midterms would be for ice masks to come off and badges to come out, this is insufficient

To be fair, it was a plausible theory at first, not so much that racism was *actually* sublimated class anxiety but that telling people that their racial animus was actually sublimated class anxiety might persuade them to let the racial animus go. But the theory just hasn’t delivered any big wins.
Every 2-4 years, a bunch of left-wing populists have the brilliant thought “Hey, what if people’s resentment of social minorities is actually just sublimated resentment for capitalist elites?” and then we get to spend 2-4 years once again learning that no, it’s very much the reverse
