I can’t believe it. A sane take on the French budget situation. ❤️ mate.
erikfossingnielsen.bsky.social
The French budget and debt are no worse than in most other major economies.
They all need a medium term plan to restore sustainability. That’ll require broad buy-in from society. It’ll have to include wealth taxation everywhere.

Better to farm solar for energy
than to farm crops to use for biofuels

Far better

1 hectare annual yield:

2t soy bean
➡️ 800 litres biodiesel ➡️ 8.29 MWh

70t sugar cane
➡️ 7000 litres ethanol ➡️ 57.5 MWh

600 kW solar
➡️ ➡️ 900 MWh (low estimate)

There is no technical or financial reason why Europe could not do the same. It’s all a question of will, and we should be ashamed of our inaction. Reading this while European carmakers are lobbying (with likely success) to postpone the IC ban is enraging.

China ≠ just coal plants and solar exports. The deeper shift: electrifying everything it can. Strategic, because China relies on imported fossil fuels. Coal is still king in the power mix—for now. But the balance is changing year by year.

Time between the initial study and the proof that it does not replicate. If there truly were a reliable way to measure « quality of publication » in a field known for shoddy research practice and questionable ethics, this would be the great news.

AI is apparently already accelerating science as a co-intelligence.

Measuring academic publications of authors: “we find that productivity among GenAI users rose by 15 percent in 2023 relative to non-users and further increased to 36 percent in 2024” and the quality of publications also went up.

When I see the frightening radicalization of the well-off bourgeoisie in Paris since the Mayor started to restrict cars, and their level of hysteria whenever a new bike lane opens, I would tend to agree.

The numbers of electric vehicles sold in Europe in 2024 are in:

⚡ 1.45 million new battery-only EVs registered
📈 +32% growth in the total electric fleet
🔋 13.6% of all new car registrations are electric

Europe is going full throttle to a clean future.

link.europa.eu/cNKjkh
A color-coded map of Europe titled "Share of electric vehicles sold in each EU country in 2024," showing the share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as a percentage of total new passenger car registrations. The EU average is 13.5%. Countries with the highest shares (>20%, darkest shade) include Sweden (35%), Netherlands (34.5%), Finland (29.5%), Luxembourg (27.4%), Belgium (28%), and Denmark (51%). Other countries like France (16.5%), Portugal (19.9%), and Austria (17.5%) are also in the <20% range. Several Eastern and Southern European countries (including Italy, Spain, Poland, and Czechia) have shares below 10% (the lightest shades).

It's not news that Europe is slow

But to read that - 35 articles in a state newspaper (public!) assessing China's chokepoints - 7 years before the policy discussion properly started here, is tragic

US & China are going for the jugular. EU sharpens its quill for another roadmap

Remarkable performance. Does PL benefit from prod.n cost arbitrage in a time of stagnation? Eg car industry, driven by variable cost margin, tends to favor maximizing utilization of plants with highest VM/unit when profit cannot come from volume. Stats on plant utiliz.n/sector would be interesting.

Very impressive. Would add that Poland’s military rampup has also mainly benefitted foreign production - another source of amazement on the performance.

Good summary of the dilemma facing the German govt / car industry. Skepticism is warranted on their collective ability to face reality and stop fighting against the inevitable rise of EV.

German auto summit tomorrow.

The sole focus on the EU combustion engine phase-out, which is 10 years away, is baffling because German cars have a demand problem today

Berlin worries a new EV subsidy scheme would be fiscally too expensive.

But demand-side support is a fiscal no-brainer here.
