The French budget and debt are no worse than in most other major economies.
They all need a medium term plan to restore sustainability. That’ll require broad buy-in from society. It’ll have to include wealth taxation everywhere.

There is no technical or financial reason why Europe could not do the same. It’s all a question of will, and we should be ashamed of our inaction. Reading this while European carmakers are lobbying (with likely success) to postpone the IC ban is enraging.

China ≠ just coal plants and solar exports. The deeper shift: electrifying everything it can. Strategic, because China relies on imported fossil fuels. Coal is still king in the power mix—for now. But the balance is changing year by year.

Il suffisait qu'il sorte de sa tour d'ivoire pour aller regarder ce qui se passait dans les villes françaises de taille moyenne, où les usines fermaient les unes après les autres dès les années 2000. Remarkable performance. Does PL benefit from prod.n cost arbitrage in a time of stagnation? Eg car industry, driven by variable cost margin, tends to favor maximizing utilization of plants with highest VM/unit when profit cannot come from volume. Stats on plant utiliz.n/sector would be interesting.

Berlin worries a new EV subsidy scheme would be fiscally too expensive.

In a new paper, we provide fresh evidence on the macroeconomic effects of public investment in 27 EU member states. We find that public investment has favorable effects on output and unemployment; doesn't crowd out private investment; and doesn't jeopardise debt sustainability.
