Excellent FT piece, the way it exposes the problem with China's concept of trade is a model of clarity and sobriety.

This is what the discourse on subsidies does not get. Cheap capital system-wide is China’s killer advantage. A bit like what was long Silicon Valley’s advantage in SW, but applied to entire industrial sectors. So cheap as to be disposable: the rate of waste is crazy, but allows quick tech evolution
there's an old stereotype of china as outcompeting america because of masses of cheap labor. but as michael pettis puts it, contemporary chinese firms don't act as if labor is free. they act as if capital is free
“Yang Jiemin, VP of the state-owned company behind the port, said its highly automated operations require 60% fewer workers than traditional ports. It underscores one advantage Chinese companies have in deploying AI versus the U.S.: no independent labor unions.” www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-r... (🎁🔗)

The implicit assumption that the US Navy, which has not managed to successfully design a frigate in 30 years, has lessons to give to the Italian or French navies is highly amusing.
A lot of people in Italian and French MIC were at times baffled by demands that in their eyes did not substantially contribute to survivability beyond what the Europeans already had with FREMM

This, plus the fact that for a good craftsman there is pleasure in the crafting, a lot more than in correcting lesser quality craft. Pleasure taken in the act of creation is too often forgotten in discussions about the merits of IA.
I'm already an above average writer so any supposed advantage to using an LLM goes out the window. I am not an above average artist, but that's why I pay artists when I need art. Remember I have it in my contracts that all work on my books (art, editing, translation, etc) has to be done by humans.
I imagine LLMs are less useful for expert wordsmiths like Mr. Scalzi.

Another USN program stopped short after massive overruns, incoherent design decisions, and changes in strategy. While the PLAN churns out DDGs by the dozen, the USN persists in its quest of the ideal how-so-tailored ship, a perfect metaphor of America’s decline. They’ll all be sunk by DF21s anyway
I applaud the Navy for innovatively streamlining their cancellation of boondoggles sooner in their lifecycle. Much improved over the LCS.

Beautiful. Not sure librarians will save the world, but they can certainly make it a better place.
Sometimes I think it’s going to be the librarians who will save us all.

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

Fits with a broad consensus, but I don’t understand why people rate the Last Jedi so high. Its action scenes really make no sense at all.
i would push rogue one down and bring solo and the last jedi up. i’d also place attack of the clones at the bottom.
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

Not sure what the best way is to achieve this goal, but it is certainly desirable.
Dr Fadhel Kaboub argues that Africa can no longer afford to trade raw minerals for finished products: “Governments must invest in processing infrastructure. Refining, precursor production, and battery assembly should happen near the mines -not overseas”

It won’t, but it should be the ultimate proof that private sector/business skills do not transfer to government and administration.
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Yep, one of the biggest drivers of the elite panic around “wokeness” was the increasing prominence of Black people and particularly Black women in their fields and we’re seeing that coalition rewarded with the targeting of Black workers.
Since February, according to my latest analysis, almost 600,000 Black women have been economically sidelined. The November 20, 2025, Jobs Report makes clear this isn’t a blip. It’s a structural crisis. That is not a recovery. It is a redistribution of opportunity.

The way the internet destroyed countless journalist careers but somehow spared people like that is one of the great injustices of the age
Just remembering how one of the most important and widely read and dropped-with-maximally-damaging-timing "Biden is old and senile" pieces was reported by Nuzzi. It makes you think!
well, I read it, and the salient, non-gross part is Lizza alleging, midsentence and without elaboration, that Nuzzi ran numerous “catch-and-kill operations” on RFK’s behalf, which would give her a role in both his appointment and the untold preventable deaths he has abetted in office. Cool.

Ukrainians are the only ones with a say on this matter. If they decide to fight on, Europe has a duty to assist them in every manner possible.
This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.
