Libraries exist! You can get a library card! And request the book from the library! You may need to wait a few days, but like…there are ways for you to read books for free that *still* don’t deprive authors of compensation for their labour.
These are pretty naked -- and therefore instructive -- examples of the sorts of defenses that people offer to try and get off the hook

The "expires in" countdown is a lie; it never reaches zero and i have watched it reset it self back to "expires in 9 minutes" three times in the last half hour instead of ever hitting zero and actually going away lol
