Us writers are weird creatures. We can't help but shake and quake over a perfect line, but all the senses will get you, if you're open to it.
And music is a story in the ears. Just like a perfume is a story for the nose.
But can you translate it into writing? Do you?

Have you heard the final boss music from the very first Silent Hill game?
Not my favourite - that would be Silent Hill 4's fight with Walter in the big blood room music - but good God my nerves were rattled
Imagine being an active dentist drill left on inside a garbage can

How do you use sound, music, or the absence of it?
And if we're speaking of the absence of it, Disturbed's Sound of Silence (with Myles Kennedy) is way better than the original of it and you'll just have to accept that.
I will die on this hill!

I do not listen to music while physically writing, though I do sometimes listen to music to inspire writing, as part of the process, same way I look at art.

I rarely listen to music when writing: and if I do, it has to have no words in it. Mostly I listen to soundtracks, or slowed down ones, slowed down Interstellar is good.
Or brown, green noise. Or nothing. I can throw down a lot of words in silence.

This is one of Matt’s favourite questions to ask us:
What does horror mean to you?

What does horror mean to you?
Thanks for attending our gathering today.
First, introduce yourself & share the horror subgenres you write.
Then, please share a happy memory you have of Matt OR a happy memory of being part of this community he started.
If the feelings are too raw right now, post a candle 🕯️

Bro culture is so absurd in real life that it’s easy to exaggerate and show in fiction how self-destructive it is. These “dudes” are their own worst enemies so that’s how I let their worldview bury them in the narrative.

+ Loss of face amongst male peers/the powerful means one holds on to power at any cost.
+ Fear of losing loved ones means another will go feral to protect them.
