This week I'm promoting my thriller THE GIRL WHO WOULD LIVE FOREVER. It's set during Christmas and there are torture devices and wolves and high tech tomfoolery and immortality. And snow. And palm trees. www.amazon.com/Girl-Who-Wou...

It's clouds. Wispy and faint and somehow directed, sliding into her vision no matter how she turns her head. And every day they are nearer.

Pens at the ready, Horror Writers. Q4.

Hang around for the outro.

I don't have any specific examples, but I watched horror movies from a very young age, and honestly the music was probably what creeped me out more than anything else. I try to simulate that in my writing by coupling unsettling sounds with the character's physiological reactions.

Q3, #HorrorWritersChat.

Us writers are weird creatures. We can't help but shake and quake over a perfect line, but all the senses will get you, if you're open to it.
And music is a story in the ears. Just like a perfume is a story for the nose.
But can you translate it into writing? Do you?

Have you heard the final boss music from the very first Silent Hill game?

Not my favourite - that would be Silent Hill 4's fight with Walter in the big blood room music - but good God my nerves were rattled

Imagine being an active dentist drill left on inside a garbage can

#horrorwriterschat - “Somewhere over the rainbow.” Bloody lemon drops. Whimsy is horror.

I use lots of music references. Music is cool. Also scratching. #horrorwriterschsmat
Q2.
How do you use sound, music, or the absence of it?
And if we're speaking of the absence of it, Disturbed's Sound of Silence (with Myles Kennedy) is way better than the original of it and you'll just have to accept that.
I will die on this hill!

Hello #HorrorWritersChat! My name is Rami Ungar, I write horror and dark fantasy, and it really depends. Sometimes it's 80s music, sometimes it's musical soundtracks, occasionally it's ASMR videos on YouTube. The story will usually dictate what I'm listening to. Just as long as it's not silence!

Rebecca Cantrell here. I write horror, mystery, thriller, comedy, whatever is shiny right this minute. When I was under contract, I was more restrained. I'm listening to Christmas music and writing Christmasy things. With blood. Otherwise I make playlists based on era and mood.

Hello #horrorwriterschat - I’m Kimberly Davis Basso I write horror filled stories about ordinary things.

I do not listen to music while physically writing, though I do sometimes listen to music to inspire writing, as part of the process, same way I look at art.

I'm Eryn, I write the horror.
I rarely listen to music when writing: and if I do, it has to have no words in it. Mostly I listen to soundtracks, or slowed down ones, slowed down Interstellar is good.
Or brown, green noise. Or nothing. I can throw down a lot of words in silence.

What does horror mean to you?

Thanks for attending our gathering today.

First, introduce yourself & share the horror subgenres you write.

Then, please share a happy memory you have of Matt OR a happy memory of being part of this community he started.

If the feelings are too raw right now, post a candle 🕯️

It’s often a fear of failure, mostly economic failure. The same stuff that keeps most of us up at night, only with, say, demons.

Bro culture is so absurd in real life that it’s easy to exaggerate and show in fiction how self-destructive it is. These “dudes” are their own worst enemies so that’s how I let their worldview bury them in the narrative.
Well then, #HorrorWritersChat. What's an archetype anyway? I jest. We're all writers here... after alllllllll....

What scares my male characters the most is loss. Regardless of their alignment, fear of loss directs their actions:

+ Loss of face amongst male peers/the powerful means one holds on to power at any cost.

+ Fear of losing loved ones means another will go feral to protect them.

#HorrorWritersChat great question! I covered this in Q3. Zach is a trans man who begins his transition at college and his fears are built around loss of self. Andy fears violence, Carl fears rejection, and Will is afraid of his sexuality being used against him.
#horrorwriterschat - Taxes. They don’t like taxes.
