First gift of the holiday season: @deboboy.bsky.social drove me across town to Friday Afternoon Tea. 💚

The staff vibes to a celestial tea spirit resonance. Delightful, knowledgeable, and approachable.

Oh, and the tea was excellent. 🫖

Groomed and bathed the nervous nelly dog. Made a batch of chai from herbs and spices on hand. Pledged fealty to the cat (who was upset @ time spent with the dog), and am now eating pumpkin pie and drinking the aforementioned chai. Let the frivolity commence.

Errand sidekick. @deboboy.bsky.social calls this is his sinister look. Having just finished The Brothers Sinister series by @courtneymilan.com, my little one-eyed guy is in good company.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

Grateful for an alert handyman and an excellent contractor for our house being dry inside with all this rain (knock wood.) Without them we’d be bailing the basement.

We sit a few hundred feet above the lake, but our hill has lots of underground springs + insufficient stormwater drains.

“…[B]urned soil can be as water repellant as pavement. As a result much less rainfall is required to produce a flash flood. A good rule of thumb is: "If you can look uphill from where you are and see a burnt-out area, you are at risk."
Thinking about the additive effects of climate change in the PNW. Skykomish River is reaching record flood levels, and I wonder how the 2022 Bolt Creek Fire burn scar is exacerbating flooding: www.weather.gov/riw/burn_sca...

My bro sent me some pics of downtown Sultan, WA this evening from a canoe! Flood waters slowly creeping up from the Skykomish river. Fortunately his house is about 30ft above the river, but I feel bad for the folks stacking sandbags this evening.

Skagit and Cascade rivers in Western Washington have run their banks at record levels. A friend just sent photos.

Many evacuated. Some at higher elevations are flooded in place. #Skagit #SkagitRiver #Cascade #CascadeRiver #Flooding #SkagitFlood #SkagitRiverFlood #WesternWashingtonFlood

Liberal Arts teaches students to think, but also serves enculturation. Stripping these courses from a university weakens us in more than one way.

Albright abdicates the university’s role in preserving and exploring what defines a society for a snack machine business model.
Yes we all agree that this is the reason colleges are in trouble

A tale of 2 states’ policies on adv ed degrees for teachers.

1990s MS paid teachers meh & near zero increase for an adv deg. WA paid better & a significant bump for an adv deg. Teachers in WA could recoup the cost of the adv deg ~quickly & improve income. People do what you enable.

Why I don’t talk to the Houston relatives unless absolutely necessary.
IRW — a Pulitzer-winning nonprofit newsroom at American — and @thebarbedwire.com traced the history of anti-trans legislation. Houston conservatives realized homophobia didn’t fly anymore, weaponized girls’ safety, and parroted segregationist language. It worked.

Child care workers are building a network of resistance against ICE
This story was produced by The 19th and reprinted with permission. The mother was just arriving to pick up her girls at their elementary school in Chicago when someone with a bullhorn at the nearby shopping center let everyone know: ICE is here. The white van screeched to a halt right next to where she was parked, and three Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents piled out. They said something in English that she couldn’t decipher, then arrested her on the spot. Her family later said they never asked about her documentation.

Why do companies make duvets the size of the top of the mattress? Do they think when people lie down they become flat? I mean, the minute you get a couple of people under a duvet, somebody’s hanging out without cover.

Pumpkin chunks sautéed for the pets. Because… family.

Pumpkin seeds toasted for snacking.

Pumpkin chunked for roasting on Thursday with fresh herbs — to go into kale salad.

Remainder of pumpkin about to be cooked for use in pastries, especially our favorite scones.

Cannot stress enough the importance of pelvic floor therapy. I wish more OB-GYNs and prenatal care providers educated people on pre- and postpartum pelvic floor work as part of a healthy pregnancy and birth.

And Yes! Everyone has a pelvic floor and may find this work helps.
I wrote this piece because I only learned about pelvic floors a few years ago, despite having had one all my life. And then it turned out to be where I store all my issues. And then that turned out to be true for a lot of people www.wired.com/story/the-pe...
The Pelvic Floor Is a Problem
Everyone’s suddenly obsessed with the pelvic floor—physical therapists, MAHA influencers, me. Could this deeply misunderstood body part really be the seat of so much modern dysfunction?
