My recent last.fm history, which shows me listening to the Life of a Showgirl by Taylor Swift, up until Eldest Daughter, in which she says "smooth operator," so I took a break from the album and listened to Sade's Smooth Operator instead. Then I resumed with the rest of the album before getting to the first chorus of CANCELLED, which immediately made me pause and take a second break by listening to diberhaze's compatibility options before continuing the song and the rest of the album. If you're reading this, y'all owe Sabrina Carpenter an apology for the way y'all dragged her before this album came out the pipeline.

It's so disappointing how hard it is to find new #Vaporwave albums in this day & age.

Go to the best-selling fresh vaporwave albums page on Bandcamp, at least 95% of what you'll see are physical reissues of records that came out years ago! Help me out here, y'all. >:(

At the end of the day, while experimenting with the genre's creative boundaries and pushing its capabilities forward are absolutely among the healthiest things you could do to a genre, I feel like too many people are missing why we keep calling back to the glory years that are over a decade old now.

I'm still optimistic; I'm seeing people gain a greater understanding of what makes this genre as beloved as it is without painting it as "lazy" or "derivative," but you would have to drag these people away from their death's dynamic shrouds while they're kicking & screaming to convince them of that.

I still keep up with the genre a great deal, and there have been some albums that I would love to see get more attention & appreciation, but when the closest thing to my favourite "pure" vaporwave album of the year is a barber beats album, I have to wonder if this genre has truly come back just yet.

tdstr's There's Still Tomorrow and christtt's soft rock are both amazing, but their experiments in multi-layered vaporwave still only capture the genre at a distance.

FM Skyline & Equip have collaborated on an excellent utopian virtual record. This is not a complaint; I just wanted to shout it out.

There have been exceptional albums that call back to traditional vapor, but you are not listening to them. Records like Ghost Enterprise's Vistas and crownplaza's Exile have fallen under the radar.

Nmesh's first album in seven years is more akin to his IDM roots than the vaporwave that blew him up.

So, checking in on the state of vaporwave in 2025.

The closest this year has gotten to a vaporwave comeback so far has been the return of Telepath with multiple albums.

Aside from that and some excellent albums, the biggest releases continue to experimentally stray away from the traditional sound.
