The Smashing Machine
The gold bowl l motif feels like the concentration of what Benny Safdie is going for with the movie. Taking so much from the John Hyams 2002 documentary, full on scenes and details, and recreating it into a narrative feature using new techniques from The Curse like having the cameras watching through the walls and one way mirrors, and having actors play more loose with the dialogue and volatile emotions. Much like how the bowl is beautiful, then shattered, then renewed into a jagged reconstruction.

watching Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, oh man this is a good one. a documentary about a making of documentary for a fake movie that director William Greaves is intentionally tanking to make the overarching documentary. really funny prank. my poisoned brain thinks it’s Game Changer coded.

also they found some terrific locations, that apartment complex is perfect for the film's humdum surrealism. Somehow looks bigger and infinitely encompassing in the composition and camera angles

Also the way the camera operator whips through Lena's apartment building, whew what a workout. For a college friend, I got to try on some old steadicam gear and quickly learned the hard way that I'm not physically ideal to accommodate one

Also really love Mary Lynn Rajskub in this movie, and it's such a terrific writing decision that as acerbic as she is, she's the one sister who visits Barry in person instead of calling. And only she/family can call him strange

I loved One Battle After Another and especially how it shot a lot of parts of California you don't normally see in movies. I live in a beautiful state!!!

It also kind of implies they're all in the same town. Like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas!

my biggest issue with One Battle After Another, a movie I really liked, but only really LIKED, is not enough DiCaprio frankly.

but man when he’s on, it’s truly some of his best work.
