Fun little experiment in style for the first day of #MothMay. My take on a mint moth, which I had not heard of before, but have striking colors!

Remember when I said I needed to draw more newts? This marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) is small, but now I have the itch. I definitely need to add more amphibians to my repertoire!

This drawing was made with watercolor and colored pencil.

swallowtail and chokecherry / colored pencil on 14x17 Duralar / 2023

Here we have a swallowtail butterfly (Papilio multicaudata) throughout multiple stages of its life - egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and imago - perched on a branch of its host plant, the chokecherry tree (Prunus virginiana)!

I don't know how to express this in a way that makes sense but my art improved by leaps and bounds once I realized it is less about translating exactly what you see onto paper than it is about creating an illusion in the viewer's eye of what you are seeing (and there are tricks, just like in magic.)

Happy #fossilfriday! Here’s an assortment of shark teeth (fossil and contemporary) from my collection, accompanied by a small plastic tiger shark. I pulled the bull shark tooth off the seafloor myself!

Today’s labors on the snake! Check out my last post to see the progress.

It’s back to teaching tomorrow, but the semester will be over in a few weeks and maybe I’ll have more painting time.

Easter eggs 😉
“ŒUFS (Eggs),” #sciart by Adolphe Millot (1857-1921) from Nouveau Larousse Illustré (1897-1904), Vol. 6, p. 473. Not just bird eggs, but also cartilaginous fish, turtles, butterflies and moths, and even a cuttlefish!

Everyone deserves a chance to see and experience your wonderful works! The fact it bumps you up in search to add alt text to your images is just gravy on top - here’s a fellow scientist w/low vision breaking it down for you (with helpful links and tools)
I’m glad so many people have found my “capybara method” for how to write alt text and image descriptions helpful! However, I know conflicting access needs exist and not everyone can write their own #AltText, so here’s an ongoing thread of tools that can help. Inclusion in thread ≠ endorsement

Sharing with the #SciArt Feed:
Friendly reminder to scientists/science communicators - the images you share (and thus grow followers, trust, credibility upon) are 100-fold better when you use alt-text because they are more accessible to broader audiences.

Want to go one step further? Attribute the source!

It's the BlueSky way.
There’s been a recent increase in #astrophotography images of the cosmos on here, so I’ve put together an alt-text checklist to assist with writing.

Our Universe is wonderful, so let’s ensure everyone gets to experiences it.

🙏 TY to all the folks who already use alt-text! #accessibility 🔭🧪📸

Happy #FossilFriday, check out these Lissodus teeth from the Substation Quarry! An array of blunt teeth would have helped these little sharks crush up crunchy crustaceans as they swam through a grand, ancient lake. These teeth almost certainly represent a new species! (1/2)
