I mean this in the spirit of curiosity: why the fuck did the Biden DOJ not release these Epstein files?

Were they just completely asleep at the wheel? Did Trump have the files stashed away in a Maralago bathroom?

Seriously what the fuck.

when they say that everyone should have a right to carry a weapon in public they mean only loyal Republicans have a right to carry a weapon in public. if you don't agree them politically and you carry a weapon then that's justification for them to shoot you dead.

It would be good to see something more real than just the vibe shift from the speech. Maybe a conference of democratic middle powers, out of Halifax or Vancouver, that can coordinate on collective sovereignty issues like payments systems, social media, corporations, and even sea lane/trade security

Canadian PM Mark Carney: “Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in the economy, in security, and in rich cultural exchange.

“But Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

I’m convinced that Carney is deus ex machina at this point. What an antithesis to Trump and what a godsend to Canada.

This man makes me proud to be Canadian.
Mark Carney's speech really is terrific: full text is here and very much worth your time.

Since a lot of 🇨🇦 pundits don't seem to get the implication here:

Carney's actions haven't "lived up to" this rhetoric because we've tried to convince other middle powers to act together and not negotiate bilaterally, and they've rejected this approach. So Canada's left with all bad choices.
In a speech to the World Economic Forum, Mark Carney says middle powers such as Canada must accept that the rules-based international order is effectively dead, and great power rivalry with is here to stay. Key excerpt:

This is basically a an infinite prisoners dilemma scenario where participants are encountering a participant that has a strategy of always/mostly defect. The superior strategy is generally tit for tat, so the proper response is to continue retaliating until the other participant stops defecting.
This is one hell of a quote. European leaders really are running out of patience.

Steady Unemployment: In line with consensus forecast, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.1% (a four-year high)
Cooling Job Growth: Hiring remains sluggish, with monthly payroll employment falling by 43,000 in December...

The first thing that needs to be done is to understand the mechanism that funnelled so many Americans into the MAGA cult, primary of which is the two-party system and the way that interacts with identity and tribalism. Without this, there is no off-ramp, only more sordid evolutions of the same.

"Trade is not fundamentally about competition. It's not us versus Canada. It's us and Canada." It's really about cooperation. And if the United States won't cooperate reliably with Canada, we shouldn't be surprised when Canada looks for new friends to cooperate with. And Americans miss out.

“Coercive” is a little naive here. As a liberal society, we like to believe people’s actions and desires can be made pure and wholly without influence, but the truth is that even the most permissive liberal societies are filled with coercive elements from culture, media, etc. 1
the only policies that will actually raise the birthrate are coercive ones, which are obviously evil and unacceptable

we should make things easier and support parents because it’s the right thing to do, and then if we want more people in the country we should simply open the doors to immigrants

Americans being absolutely useless on the left, and downright dangerous on the right — including their dichotomous/polarized thinking patterns — is a function of them both taking for granted living in the most powerful country in history.

Left-right axis is very vibes based depending on environmental-ish factors, social issues, etc. Very very tough to put on a 2 axis chart. A general vibe that can be misleading. It’s an approximation.

Discouraging employment and productivity while shielding landed wealth is the opposite of what Canada needs.

And yet, you see the exact priorities at every council table, from Vancouver to Toronto.
