Sora 2 Is An Act Of Financial Recklessness and Active Deceit By A Desperate Company — And All It’s Going To Do Is Lose OpenAI Money Sora 2 is an obvious and desperate attempt to jump-start ChatGPT’s user growth at a time when OpenAI is, according to The Information, raising another $30 billion and needs to show some growth. Nowhere is this more obvious than OpenAI saying that Sora 2 “may be the GPT‑3.5 moment for video”. It needs a new GPT-3.5 moment, it needs it so badly. Based on the above chart showing the burst of activity following the launch of 4o Image Generation, I believe Sora 2 will lead to a temporary bump in user activity, and likely some degree of signups — though I’d argue that’s mitigated by OpenAI making the launch invite-only, something which I imagine it’ll ease in the coming days or weeks as it grapples with increasing growth while managing compute capacity. And until they do, this is an obvious attempt to get users to sign up to a product that most of them won’t have access to, giving ChatGPT a brief boost in signups in the process. Whether or not this is the case will be heavily based on how quickly OpenAI opens up access. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Sora 2 cost way more than $5 per 10 seconds on a GPU level. Based on information provided to me by an infrastructure provider, one instance of OpenAI’s smaller reasoning models can “shard” across 4-12 GPUs, and one particularly annoying coding job can easily absorb that compute just for one customer. Sora 2 is likely one of the most computationally intense consumer products that anyone has ever built, and OpenAI is pointing hundreds of thousands if not millions of users at it and saying “go absolutely nuts,” actively encouraging them to make as many stupid pieces of content as possible. OpenAI’s plan is obvious, and near-identical to the playbook from image generation — controversy and virality in the hopes of getting a bunch of users, something that may or may not work but is guaranteed to … OpenAI Is Trying To Recreate The Virality Of 4o Image Generation — Which Only Led To A Brief Bump In Usage If anything, the leaked costs suggest that OpenAI’s costs for compute are horrifying. $2.5 billion in immediate compute costs for $4.3 billion in revenue, driven by predominantly text-based generation based on OpenAI’s own paper on ChatGPT usage over time, which says that 92.7% of its usage is for text-based categories, with “Multimedia” (generating and analyzing images) accounting for a meager 7.3% as of July 2025, with a spike of usage during the March launch of 4o image generation where people created horrible Ghibli-esque images at scale for what appears to be a month, cresting at just above 12% of ChatGPT usage in May before tumbling back down to 7.3%. In fact, it doesn’t really seem like image generation is that popular, trundling along at around 4% of consumer ChatGPT messages for most of its existence. And if you look at the chart above along with its user growth, it’s very obvious that this launch led to a momentary bump in users, a bump in image generation, and then a settling-down to the norm of “people dicking around with ChatGPT.” What’s also really curious is the total lack of any mentions of Sora, and only three mentions of video, all within the “Classifier Prompts” Appendix at the end, which I assume means examples of the ways in which OpenAI classified a user’s prompt as part of the study.
