I feel it's worth noting that in tuesday's meeting in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce about a shitton of "protect the children!" internet bills, committee members advocated for leaving carve outs in their various censorship/surveillance bills for advertisers to keep advertising at kids
The Horses situation has brought this Epic Games policy to my attention and it might be the most embarassing exception put to print

Asking to any sex worker.... is the word prostitute good? Bad? Neutral? Most of the time I just use sex worker, but I kinda had a brain fog moment and used prostitute in a post and I'm wondering if I fucked up.

Wanna make sure I know for the future.

It's important to have these conversations for sure! And it's good that many people are reasonable like yourself in addressing it. I hope Steam and others eventually come around on being more accepting of the full art possibilities of video games and their power in making us question our world.

Games as art, which clearly they are, we need to be more accepting of how two different games can have similar content with different emotions attached to them. Art, throughout human history, has gone through these motions many times. Video games are sadly in their era of the "obscenity" question.

I can understand why Horses makes people more uncomfortable than Cyberpunk, but their purposes and uses of these subjects is entirely different. One is more artful in intentionally questioning horror and discomfort. The other has greater levels of gore and dismemberment. If we are to treat video...

I'm watching a streamer play Horses right now. So far, it's a game that raises uncomfortable situations that confront the player's morals and ethics. Last night, I played Cyberpunk 2077. Both have nudity or implied, sexual content, and subject matter dealing with death, suicide, and subjugation...

If you only fight censorship right up to the line where it becomes your definition of porn, refusing to have solidarity with pornographers, I can't find it in me to care about your problems. You've shown you don't care about mine and will bounce the moment you get what benefits you.

A lot of creators essentially saying "My work might contain nudity and sexual situations, but it's NOT porn. My work is important and artistic, while their work is dirty, which is still okay to hate and censor." But guess what! The purity squad makes no such distinction.

As a pornographer myself, I feel... weird about creators who make distinctions between porn and other adult/sexual content. If you defend porn, your work will ALSO be defended. Don't be afraid to get down in the mud with us. You're gonna end up here anyway.
there is plenty of sexual content on steam. the problem isn't that valve is denying sexual content (though, as a near-monopoly, that would also be a problem) it's that valve is denying specifically sexual content that is non-pornographic, most notably in the horror genre.
It's pretty clear everyone would rather strawman me than have an actual conversation.

The content in Horses is sexual and well within Valve's right to say it violates their sexual content policies.

Horses has every right to exist. Valve has every right not to distribute it.

This is just to point out there is a lot of hypocrisy and double standards about what is “acceptable” across different medias and this is only going to escalate further

There is this movie I watched a while ago called The Farm (2018), absolutely not worth the watch it’s fucking terrible. But it has themes and elements that are equal to or just as upsetting as you would find in Horses, you can watch it for free on Tubi
I have many thoughts about this, one is I can't help but think this is all just shining a light on how games are still being held to wildly different standards than other media like film. I've played very few games like HORSES but watched so many films like it (as a connoisseur of arthouse horror).
Humble's now banned it too, post-launch:

its frustrating because a lot of game discourse could be solved if it was given the same grace as other media, people will complain about having to play sequels but you never see people complain about reading books in order, its very strange even people who supposedly really love games do this.

Releasing Monday, Dec. 8th!

Been looking forward to this! Perhaps answers the exciting question of what a new action adventure game descended from Xanadu, Ys, Hydlide, etc., instead of Zelda feels like?
Two weeks to Angeline Era releasing! Been nervous about the release but very happy that testers are enjoying searching for levels across its overworlds, as well as the bumpslash combat and story!

We are recruiting game makers affected by the 'NSFW' policy changes on Steam and itch.io for a survey. This survey is part of a broader project on the factors that shape the production, distribution, and consumption of porn games. More info about the project and survey at www.pppproject.com

This reeks of groupthink via platform. If you suspect there are squicky parts of an apple because your buddy told you there was are you going to cut open the apple to see which parts are bad for you or just throw it away?

They dont respect anything as art, just consume product!
