"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

imo, this is actually a very common problem with people. Because we can't know everything, we're often left to our instincts to decide who to listen to, and too many people will accept confidence as a proxy for correctness.

The threat posed by AI is indirect. It presents society with an uncertain situation which tempts us to make a series of horrible mistakes in response.
It's like terrorism that way. 9/11 wasn't an existential threat to us DIRECTLY, but boy did it cause us to overreact in all the wrong ways.
