This is what an origin in Canterbury leads to.

1. On political gaslighting. Yesterday Jenrick defended his comments on Handsworth by lashing out at 2 pieces of work I was centrally involved with to imply it's people like me who are divisive, not him...

This is almost certainly because she thinks she is Lord Vetinari, which in a way is correct because she is in fact Cosmo Lavish.

Kemi Badenoch claiming Terry Pratchett as her favourite author is wild

I wished I'd known this was an option before I used up all my material not pulling.

Just typical anti-frog propaganda from the Toadygraph. And to think they used to be a newtspaper

"So you're saying it goes round and round in circles before careering wildly to the right and flying off-track when there's too much power?"

"Yes, but enough about the Tory Party, let's play Scalextric."

Would you like to have a go on the Scalextric, it's great fun

When I was working in London 15 years ago we'd sometimes manage to gather a few of these orphan sites around one of the big projects being done and wrap their remaining post-ex up in the big one.

No worries. Looks like a fairly classic 60s/70s bit of urban archaeological mitigation- desperately dig the bits you can get to and try to tie a much larger site together from these keyholes. Usually meant that the post-ex was horrible/not fully done/they did their best with what they had.

Got a wee bit ahead of myself- there was some earlier material found in the area, just not quite back to the C6th: www.oxoniensia.org/volumes/1977...

Speedwell House apparently built in early 1970s (www.oxfordpreservation.org.uk/sites/defaul...), excavations and survey done in 1969/70 but don't seem to have found much prior to C13th. Possibly because some of it was declared unsafe and excavation prohibited (www.oxoniensia.org/volumes/1971...).

Trump is now 40 minutes late and counting. Naval cadets still standing around in total and increasingly uncomfortable silence.

Why isn't this a short series called 'French Letters'?

If they will call part of their quite boggy country the Waffle-botherer's equivalent of Sealand then they can't be surprised when honest English tars ram it under the misapprehension that it's the briny deep.

Damn tricky the Dutch.

Given HMS Satisfaction was on its way to Jamaica, negligence doesn't begin to describe it...
samuelpepys.bsky.social
To my office till 9 at night, among other things examining the particulars of the miscarriage of the Satisfaction, sunk the other day on the Dutch coast through the negligence of the pilott.

"Sir, I must beg to express my regrets that my late command the Satisfaction is lost on her way to the Caribbean station."

"Jamaica?"

"That's a matter for the courts martial sir but I deny all."

Joni Ernst: "Unfortunately, our farmers do need that assistance. They don't like it. They consider it welfare. They want trade, not aid. So we really need to see some of these new markets opening up around the globe ... but if there's anybody that can make a deal, it's President Trump."
