The biggest difference is the bits are somewhat contained across a few screens each. So now it's like annoying 3D Dragon's Lair. It still kind of blows, but it's nowhere near as impossible as the 2nd game.

I only recently learned that Spear if Destiny has a boss key - F1. And that carried over to later versions of Wolf 3D as well, despite everywhere in it F1 still listed as help.
