Happy writing fun ball. Born and raised on Treaty One territory. Living back in Winnipeg, for now, but left my heart in Kyiv.

Investigating a Possible Scammer in Journalism’s AI Era | The Local
A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

I can’t open twitter right now without losing my marbles but please know that 90% of replies to any Tweet about Ukraine and especially Donbas are absolute propaganda bullshit spouted by people who have never spent a second there or know anyone from there

perfectly summarized by Vincent
Social media is full of pseudo-academic and journalistic jackals who, since 2022, have positioned themselves as the only people who “really” care about Ukraine. But their “analysis” consists of only one message: “for its own good,” Ukraine must capitulate and accede to whatever Russia demands. /1

Just the president of the United States rationalizing that a Washington Post reporter was basically asking to be murdered and cut to pieces with a bone saw because of his reporting.

As he sits next to the thug who ordered it.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

Trump is ranting barely coherently to McDonald's franchise owners: "The one pilot said, 'skedaddle!' And that thing just turned on its side -- pppph. And it's so unbelievable. And that knocked out Iran nuclear capability."

I keep saying this, but: with empathy to those who’d want this in their grief, a key part of healing grief is coming to accept that there will be no new interactions with that person. It really isn’t healthy to feed this to people who are emotionally vulnerable.
For real, check this out. Evil.

It continues to appear that the people with all the world’s money have gone completely insane
Based on analysis of years of revenues, losses and funding, since 2023, OpenAI has taken in $28.6bn in cash and had $13.7bn in losses.

However, reports say OpenAI ended 1H 2025 with $9.6bn in cash - suggesting OpenAI's losses are billions higher than reported.

I tend to agree with this. If AI works like its cheerleaders claim/hope it will - replacing whole swathes of human labour - then they need a real economic plan for dealing with the consequences of that. This can only mean heavily redistributing the profits.
you either need universal basic income for humans or you must limit the use of Gen AI in such a way that humans aren’t radically impoverished as a result.

you cannot have both, both for morality reasons and also because this is the kind of thing that can result in globally-nightmarish conflict.
This seems more like an argument for universal basic income than for limiting technology. (I think both are probably futile in the current political environment, but I’d prefer the latter.)
