Just imagine if I’d created the Outsiders Project on homelessness by typing prompts into a computer. The images may have been striking but the whole thing would be meaningless. Documenting real and tangible human experiences, the emotions, stories, joy and sadness is something AI can never do.
This is what those who have fallen into the trap of generative AI simply can’t grasp. Photography isn’t about making a clever image it is rooted in the subject - the thing itself - and in the absence of that all AI images are by definition shallow, transient and meaningless.
The Thing Itself: The fundamental principle of photography by Bill Jay. If you are a photographer and haven’t read this then you should.

New Illustration: "We Beat 'Em Before..."

Taken from a British WW2 poster, the original features a WW1 German soldier at the top. I just swapped it for the Nazi soldier it had at the bottom.

HUGE appreciation for the local Indivisible groups in Indiana who have been working for weeks and weeks on this, meeting with legislators, testifying, protesting, calling, advocating. Pressure works!!!
🎉 BREAKING: WE DID IT! 🎉

After days of intense pressure from D.C., the Indiana Senate REJECTED the mid-decade gerrymandered map!

This victory belongs to every Indivisible member, every activist, and every Hoosier who called, emailed, and showed up.

I think part of What's Going On with billionaires is that the daily friction of interacting with normal people is part of what anchors people to the real world, and once you have enough money to buy your way out of the friction you can knock down a load-bearing column propping up your sanity.

Every time I see an excerpt from this Nuzzi production I think of Mencken's lines re: Harding's writing: "It is so bad that a sort of grandeur creeps into it. It is rumble and bumble. It is flap and doodle. It is balder and dash."

It’s been a year to the day we bought (and then didn’t, for reasons we still don’t fully know) InfoWars. We’re still trying. In the year since, we built The Onion into one of the biggest newspapers in the United States. I’m so proud of this place. I’m proud we do hard stuff. Thank you for caring.

There's an element of the smart set that doesn't give a crap about volunteering and ground game, thinks it's meaningless. Mamdani's campaign had 104,400 volunteers and knocked on 3 million doors and it sounds like they're just getting started.
"Engagement doesn't matter" is such a dumb opinion.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
