"Observations in the Eastview Mall Habitat, 11/29/35", a bit of gonzo journalism about the local mall experience on a black friday weekend. What started as a cheap way to kill a depressing afternoon turned into the longest nonfiction I've written in at least a decade. I think it came out well.
A good habit to pick up as a writer is to people-watch. Go out into the world, listen to folks talking to each other, look at the way they interact and move. Make a study of the social.

No one’s happy with it. Every year new versions of old advice about surviving controlling, abusive, and fashy family gets dusted off as people wind their way to something they don’t even want to do. Why do it? Dump the colonialist holiday trappings and do something better with the quiet of the day.
