Autistic people get a bad rap for universally lacking empathy (some of us do identify as experiencing low empathy - many do not) but the truth is most people do not, on a day to day basis, truly empathize with people who are fundamentally different from them.

This is worth reading.
Always thought that the name Rebecca meant "a knot". This seemed fair enough: persistent, stubborn, perhaps. But I looked up name meanings for our daughter and her friend earlier and for Rebecca it said "to tie/bind", representing "strong bonds, connection, and enduring strength". Today's tiny joy 😊

This is a really good point. Up until the age of 8 or 9 I could take my daughter to the park annd she would always find someone to play with. Age 10 there's rarely anyone. The boys aren't there either, as far as I can see.
Girls' use of public space is a really important cause -- and has been such a big issue since my own childhood (remember the subplot in Bill's New Frock about who gets to use which bits of the school playground?) -- but some work can have the effect of over-emphasising a gender binary, I worry.

The different Japanese names for sweet potato in this thread are interesting.
In Japanese, the roots or underground organs of a plant that store nutrients and hypertrophy are called "イモ(imo)".
By the way, potato was introduced to Japan in 17th century from Jacatra, which is old name of Jakarta of Indonesia.
