Fun fact - if you withdrew the entire US federal budget in singles and stacked it, it would stretch past the moon.

Also, the Treasury would be very mad at you.

Wow. The South Yamhill River in McMinnville is projected to crest within 2 feet of the flood of '96. Hasn't been this high in nearly 30 years.

I'm fine where I am, but I feel bad for Sheridan upstream - that whole town is built low in the flood plain.

My brother created an index for publicly traded Oregon companies. We call it the WORM (Woodworth Oregon Market Index). It's compiled DOW-style from companies with significant operations or otherwise based in Oregon.

I sure do love being an independent firm.

My question is whether this will get pushback - I really like this rule change, but it still needs broad buy-in to work. Previous statewide upzonings in Oregon were built on the political compromise that smaller towns could remain more restrictive - this makes that harder (which is good but risky).
Tomorrow, Oregon is poised to approve the nation's first statewide model zoning code + become the first state to make it mandatory in cities that underperform their peers on housing production www.sightline.org/2025/12/03/n...

it's true - US codes result in really ugly, massive development.

single stair helps solve this.
NEW PAPER w/ @cselmendorf.bsky.social & @jkalla.bsky.social:

An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods.

Some of what we think is NIMBYism might not be!

Trump Administration is to propose a massive cut in federal transit funding as part of 2026 transport legislation.

This proposal would decimate the nation's transit systems, while not actually solving the revenue problem federal transportation funding faces.

Cutting Federal Transit Funding Won’t Fix Budget Shortfalls. But It Would Make Transportation Less Affordable for Americans.
A proposal to eliminate federal public transit funding would not only fail to address the existing funding gap but would also leave millions of Americans, pa…

My most woke opinion is that cities should completely ignore suburban commuters and design the city we aspire to be. They’ll either begrudgingly commute in by car, mode shift, or be replaced by others in foot traffic
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

This is the first sizeable development I've seen in Portland that takes advantage of 2004's SB 1537, which requires mandatory approval of certain adjustments (variances) to local zoning codes. www.portlandmaps.com/detail/permi...

It will allow the 127 unit Apatheia development to move forward.

Also, pointing to the research from Eriksen & Orlando (2021) that the cost of extra height is nonlinear & tends to happen at different break points when construction material & building code ramps up requirements. So, allowing single stair to reach the height before highrise codes kicks-in, is good.

We saw this same issue — voting day bomb threats — in 2024. Motive could be strategic voter suppression, but in 2024 it was likely foreign interference designed to cause mayhem and further erode trust in US election. These tactics can also provide pretext for contesting elections later.
